Can't really lose as a non-AFL fan in this debate.

Either they build it, half the state is angry and the AFL has another blackhole on their hands to go along with the Lions, Suns and GWS.

Or it's rejected and it's another hit to the AFL's image.

Happy days.

Not that I want to stop them from making a mistake, but God knows why they are thinking Darwin before Canberra.
The is virtually no talk in the Melbourne media about a 20th team. It is a non issue, at least until (if) the Tassie team is confirmed.

Darwin is obviously not a serious option, likely just publicity with two games up there last month. WA3 is the safe option, similar to Bris3 for the NRL. Can‘t see them adding a 20th team any time soon.

Tasmania won’t be a black hole. It is the most AFL mad place in the world. Like Newcastle, they will have solid crowds and support. Plus the Tas government is chipping in something like $12m per year for a decade, so it won’t be the drain and embarrassment that GC and GWS are.

Darwin may be needed after all if Tasmania falls over o_O

Not surprised

Cost benefit ratio of 0.5 ie a loss of 30. 9 million

Nsw govt canned stadiums with a cba of 0.8

Spending a billion to lose 309 million over 20 years is crazy it will ruin the states credit rating

I shudder to think what the cba is on the new 4.5 billion stadium at Victoria park

Tassie is already a welfare state, so it will need to cut that $12m from existing allocation or go back to the mainland for additional funding... funding the stadium build is its biggest issue.

If he`s relying on the Greens I`d imagine one of their first demands would be a halt to the stadium.
For Tassie, upgrading one of the existing cricket ovals would be sufficient, at least for the first decade of its existence... if the team was a success i.e. supported by the citizens and taken into their heart and soul, then there would be grassroot support to lobby for a you beaut stadium.

AFL really didn't want a Tassie team, threw out these onerous conditions expecting them to be rejected, so they could say "well we tried, but the State government didn't support it"... but the government swallowed it whole, instead of calling out the shit deal and putting up an adequate stadium solution and said "we'll roof it when every other AFL team on the north island has a roofed stadium".

Labor need to scrap this stadium and call the AFL out on their bullshit. There is no reason to require this stadium to have a roof and cost a billion+ dollars. They can make it clear they’re ok with building a stadium but the current demands from the AFL and promises from the TAS government are ridiculous. The team will be a huge black hole financially for the them.

Politically I think it’s actually a relatively easy sell too for labor.

Hang on tassie govt is going to put in $375mill, its estimated to bring in $1billion in value over 20 years, yet its going to make a loss for the State? Eh?

Having seen first hand what amazing outcomes for a city a new stadium can have they'd be dumb to miss this opportunity.

You're quick to jump in and go to bat for any proposed AFL stadium that receives criticism... Interesting 🤔

I guess when your revenue goes up by $200mill in one year you can afford such largesse's?
Sorry no business worth its salt wastes money time & time again and says it's OK we got a lot of it.
If you continue to put in good money after bad, aka the Giants year after year and only continue marking time , then head office officials would be lucky to get a real job in private enterprise.
They could get a job with the Nauru AFL.
Note some higher ups within the AFL are saying the Giants expenditure is a waste of space with little to show for it. Remember Folau was going to get all the Polynesian kids to jump on board. The waste in N.Z. And they are not happy with the Suns.
Can't get your hand off it , the AFL that is mate.
