Perth Team--NRL Expansion

I really want a Perth team by 2020, I think the only way to increase our broadcasting rights money and to setup our long term future is by heading national. Although I believe, Adelaide isn't quite ready, I think Perth has the hallmarks of making a very interesting bid to enter the game.

POSITIVES :

  • 1.7 million people or more
  • Booming economy
  • Consistent unemployment levels below 4%
  • More than 2 million visitors inject money into the economy each
  • High median incomes
  • Great infrastructure in terms of rail and roads
  • Good weather
  • WA reds are already playing in the Jim Beam Cup
NEGATIVES:

  • Members Equity Stadium might need to be upgraded with renovations
  • Not a major rugby league heartland
  • Capital costs to start a new franchise
  • RU and AFL are already there
  • No real private investors in the WA reds bid
  • Haven't entered the Toyota NYC or NSW Cup and/or Queensland Cup
What is everyone's thoughts about this possible expansion corridor?

Perth is the most boring place i've ever been. Tamworth had more things going on then that place.

If they have a NRL team they will really need a jacked up salary cap

Not before another team in QLD. Qld is the priority. Perth are not drawing enough crowds to warrant a team now.

Over 2million here now.
Another postive: loads of ex pats from the UK, NZ and eastern states!
WA is also the 3rd strongest RL state.

Get a Petition going, flood David Gallop. Make him an offer he can't refuse, get the financial capital ready. Get private investors involved.

Qld has enough already! You've got 4 teams ffs what more do you want? One in Mt Isa next? Give others a chance! :x

South-East Qld is a better area to expand. It has not failed like Perth did before and QLD is booming at the moment. A 2nd Brisbane team would be on the cards as well. I'd rather the Sth East though.

I don't post often, but i must point out how dumb this is. Perth didn't fail at all.

The Reds had massive membership, were turning the corner financially and were established. They got booted so money could be spent on creating a Melbourne team. Personally I think this was a stupid decision.

Secondly, again proving how dumb this post is, South East Queensland had this team called the Crushers. While I don't think they failed, if you say a club ceasing to exist is failure then they did. In fact if you call the Reds a failure then you must say the Crushers were.

Really though it was the Broncos demanding that team get cut. Still there is no good reason why Perth and the Crushers shouldn't exist today. They should be successful franchises int he competition, but they got screwed.

You could even go back to previous editions of the Gold Coast franchise to talk about south east queensland failing.

They need to show some improvement in terms of crowds- no less than 5,000 average, I'd be looking at 8-10K though

For a 3rd-grade comp?!

Look at Wynnum, Redcliffe & Ipswich's crowds, they come nowhere near that!

Even their capacities barely reach that:
Kougari: 5k
Nth Ip Res: 8k
Dolphin: 10k

I'd say we judge their fanbase on the NRL games to be played there.

While I have nothing against a Perth side at all, another brisbane side out Ipswich way would be a winner for sure. Qld league fans flock to support the sides up there and another side would be successful without question. The standard of Qld cup is strong and getting stronger each year. If league is to succeed you have to take it to the fans and Qld is the go IMO.

imo RL should be targeting areas without RU and AFL dominance. Establish a second side in NZ, another Brisbane side and maybe look at places like Darwin or PNG, or both. Once they prosper Adelaide and Perth will become more viable because at least then the code will look like it has more potential

Miller, an Ipswich side has nowhere to play. Neither does a sunshine coast side, for that matter. A second brisbane side would be okay but why do that and risk ending up like sydney with too many teams that you cant really get rid of. Sunshine Coast and Ipswich are both growing fast but still arent near the population or corporate base of Gold coast or newcastle. They will get their soon, but they can also wait. I firmly believe that any new team should prove their worth like gold coast did. That means getting good solid crowds at at least 3 or 4 trial games a year.

I really think that Wellington and Christchurch should be next off the rank. Both have the juniors and would get decent crowds. It would also help the NZ game massively. I think they should start as soon as possible. After this, Perth is next in line, and they could still pass the kiwis if they work hard enough. But they need to get their finances right, get the game televised in the city and get trial games played their ro prove their is interest. The NRL should be helping with this in many ways, such as advertising heavily in perth, supporting and maybe even subsidising the advertising and running of the current reds. I wouldnt mind seeing them get a cut of the NRL Grant monies, even before they get accepted as an actual team in the NRL. Test matches or origin matches should also be played there over the next few years.
