Yeah, but it's still soccer, so there's plenty of money thrown around from them.

What amazes me is that the NBL which no-one cares about (well, very few) manages to have a 'national' comp (including a Perth team), and even more surprising is the national waterpolo competition manages to have a Perth team too. Surely there's more money in League than waterpolo..?

I have to laugh at soccer though. The national womens soccer comp is televised on free-to-air tv (ABC), while it's male A-League equivalent can't get a free-to-air tv gig!

I live in Perth, am a massive Broncos and Maroons fan and though I don't attend much local RL and have only been to one Jim Beaa Cup game here.

I am not interested in spending my time and money to sit out in the weather to support a 3rd rate team, yet if the reds were to rejoin the NRL I would buy a season membership and attend every week.

I have been a Wildcats season ticket holder for 12 years (Basketball), and the comparison you make is apples with oranges, as the Wildcats have been in the NBL for 30 years and have a die hard supporter base of about 5,000 fans who pack their stadium for each home game (capacity if 5000).

The salary cap is about 1 million so operating costs for an NBL franchise are far less than what it would cost to run an NRL side, problem is, League is less popular in every state other than NSW and QLD than basketball is, so where does the revenue come from to sustain the operating costs?

I'd love nothing more than to have Perth based NRL side but I fear there aren't the same level of rich boy investors salivating at the prospect of investing into a code with a reputation of such poor off field behaviour and with such a small fan base as there was for the Glory and Force and Wildcats even.

I hate Union, have never attended a Force game and likely never will, but they manage to pull a fair crowd and get great media coverage and appear to have all their ducks in a row.

If anything, the Reds would want to piggy back on the push by the Force and Glory for a top notch rectangular field, learn what they've done right and wrong with regards to establishing support in an AFL and cricket dominated state and follow their lead.

And I thought AFL supporters were dillusional.
Victoria. The two melbourne NBL teams average less than 7000 between them. Much lower than melb Storm.
WA.Perth got close to 10,000 to an NRL trial for 2 out of town teams (obviously) one of which fielded a below standard team. Wildcats get 5000 max.
SA. The Rams averged 11000 over the 2 years the were in the comp. The 36ers get 4,700.

such poor off-field behaviour? the stories I have heard about the west coast eagles makes the bulldogs look like angels and i have a friend who has pretty close ties with the eagles.

I have nothing against an NRL team in Perth HOWEVER..

Brisbane is the 2nd largest Rugby League city in Australia. When you think about it the fact they do not have a second team and a regional 'Derby' against a same city side borders on the point of ridiculous.

You only have to do your research on the old Queensland RL competition to realise the popularity of the sport in the area. Granted it started fading towards the latter end however that was more linked to players flocking to play in the Sydney comp.

We have the best rectangular stadium in the country that is used on average twice a month. A 2nd Brisbane with the backing of the NRL, QRL AND BRONCOS (won't happen without their approval) won't and can't fail.

Gold Coast was a step in the right direction. Before Central Coast, Perth or 2nd NZ team (ridiculous to include before the afore mentioned) a 2nd Brisbane team MUST be a priority for the NRL.

Just to put it into perspective how long has the A-League been around? And how long has RL existed in QLD. Well the A-League already has teams in the same markets as the NRL. Great what a revolutionary, forward thinking board working in the best interestof the game can do.

Most of Perth's public are just bandwagoner's, no real desire to support the game, only there when things are good.

At last - a balanced view from a realist Perth based RL fan. Refreshing to read.

He's in Kalgoorlie (the names a give away!)

KalRed the Dockers have averaged more than every RL team bar one since their inception and have been generally shocking on the field since day one! You can hardly call their fans "fair weather"!

We have one of the best supported RL clubs outside the NRL so again, for where we are, I would say the Perth public are holding their own!

I really want a Perth team by 2020, I think the only way to increase our broadcasting rights money and to setup our long term future is by heading national. Although I believe, Adelaide isn't quite ready, I think Perth has the hallmarks of making a very interesting bid to enter the game.

POSITIVES :

  • 1.7 million people or more
  • Booming economy
  • Consistent unemployment levels below 4%
  • More than 2 million visitors inject money into the economy each
  • High median incomes
  • Great infrastructure in terms of rail and roads
  • Good weather
  • WA reds are already playing in the Jim Beam Cup
NEGATIVES:

  • Members Equity Stadium might need to be upgraded with renovations
  • Not a major rugby league heartland
  • Capital costs to start a new franchise
  • RU and AFL are already there
  • No real private investors in the WA reds bid
  • Haven't entered the Toyota NYC or NSW Cup and/or Queensland Cup
What is everyone's thoughts about this possible expansion corridor?

I am not so sure on that one Chris.

WA will be the first city under water with global warming, their weather is appalling, think bush fires transposed to below water!

Yes, WA has a population of 1.7 mill, but teenage pregnancy is nothing to crow about! Unemployment is low because they have a young population and manage to pretend that these yokels are at school and not on the dole.

WA needs to worry about being abandoned as a state of Australia before anything else. The only way these clowns can generate wealth is to dig it up. What if we took away their bucket and spade?

NO WA for the NRL!

I was refering to the attitude of casual league fans like the bloke I replied to mate, not having a go at diehard and devoted fans like you or I.

Typical one dimensional Sydneyite! Do your geography!

Is your name "Human Wrecking Ball"?

FFS - you and Perth Twat. Dumb and Dumber.

Talking about geography - have you worked out that there are more people on the Manly-Warringah peninsula than in Mandurah yet?

Celtic Crusaders first home game drew 5,000 at the weekend (with about 1000 Hull fans included). SL realise the benefit of a Welsh side in the long term.

SL would cream itself if it had a non RL heartland city of 1.7mill that could guarantee a 12,000 crowd in a decent stadium, strong jnr base and strong management team banging at the door.
