By law you do need a licence to keep any sort of reptile.
I looked into it as was interested in getting a lizard (bearded dragon), however the actual costs for the caging, heat lamps etc and was just way too pricey. Not to mention buying specific food (like frozen mice mm mmm) on a regular basis.
And on top of that the snake/lizard costs can vary from around $60 up to a few hundred $$$$

Yeah we've got a snake, it's a carpet snake. I agree that watching them eat a mouse is pretty cool. Our old one only had one eye, and when he striked at the mouse, he used to miss. It was pretty funny. We had to keep him coz he just wouldn't have survived out in the wild.
