Yeah, many sports have this "jobs for the boys" mentality ingrained into their culture, although there aren't really many good NRL coaches out there to choose from.

Penrith had some culture issues not long back, with the player group being too powerful. A lot of the guys we moved on went to Cronulla, I wonder if they just reestablished themselves there. Maybe the didn't start it, but might have folded straight in to the existing group and made things worse.

Phil Gould was the best thing for them.

He isn't going to take shit and probably laid down the law as to what is required of each and every player if they're going to represent the club - on and off the field. Working in the media and out of the cocoon which these sports clubs effectively are, he understands the exposure of the game and the clubs have in the wider community.

This is something many players and some clubs obviously don't get yet in 2014. They are all representing their clubs and the game every single second of every day.

If that's too much of a responsibility, then tear up your 6 figure contracts go lay bricks if you want anonymity.
