Maybe not if the money is paid up-front. HST I can`t imagine the journo would make a typo on such a significant point. $2m/annum on the other hand is ludicrously way too little.
It'd still be a bad deal even if the money was paid up front. The NRL would be sacrificing money and their negotiating position for a short term sugar hit.

BTW, I can see that kind of typo happening in a rushed tweet.

Exactly.

Ground upgrades were included in the Reach around
Yet they still got $15mil for this year's and between $16-20mil going forward if the reporting is to be believed.

That's smart negotiating on the AFL's part, and if the NRL were smart they'd negotiate similar deals.

Separate

doing the stadia they get the grand final for free

last year they paid around 8 million to keep it for one year and they just did another one year extension
None of those deals were in the NRL's favour.

You're basically arguing that it's okay that Qld's deal is a shit offer because the NRL has agreed to shit offers in the past, which is just dumb.

Lmao I’m agreeing with you all these deals are poor

5 million for the a league grand final shows the nsw govt has money

I’m all in favour of Sydney losing the grand final but it won’t happen

You're right, I shouldn't have said you. I meant the people presenting the opposing argument more broadly.

The only reason the GF can't leave Sydney is because of corruption BTW.

Getting 2 million for magic is a joke when they get 28 millon in economic benefit

magic should be ten million a year and the grand final 20 million a year

if the incumbents don’t pay put it to auction

Sydney is oversaturated in rugby league content it doesn’t have to be in Sydney if there’s more money to be made elsewhere

Magic Round should 100% stay in Brissy.

But the QLD gov need to pony up and pay a price commensurate to an event of this stature.
Magic Round should go to the highest bidder and there should be a mechanism to make sure that moves around from time to time.

I'd almost go so far as to say that Brisbane should be blocked from hosting Magic Round out of spite if the Qld gov really offered $2mil a year over 10 years for it. It suggests that they take the NRL/RL for granted, and think that the NRL doesn't have other options.

I have my doubts Badel's article is even remotely accurate tbh.

Every box is ticked by having it in Brisbane, there is no better 50k+ venue to host it in this country.

Do you also subscribe to the highest bidder mantra for the NRL GF?

Absolutely, and the same goes for any event.

The only people that are against these events going to open tender are ones that want to monopolise each event for themselves. Basically they're putting their convenience and personal enjoyment over what is in the best interests of the game as a whole. It's pretty disgusting when you think about it.

There're grounds capable of hosting Magic Round in any of the five major capitals and Eden Park in NZ, and it should be open to any of them to bid to host it.

If NRL keeps ticket revenue and get a % of bar sales ( As was reported with their pitch for the GF)

Then it makes the deal way more than $2m a year.

That part was left out to stir up people.

Dude them paying $2m and the NRL only taking home $2m are seperate things

2 Mill won't keep it in Brisbane past 2025 ,
the NRL would want a lot more then that & rightly so ....

I'd imagine racistballs deal with the SA govt also see's them keep ticket revenue & other associated incomes for
reach around
& they're getting a lot more then 2 mill

That is the detail I mentioned.

When NRL clubs sell home games that get a flat rate. The host city/region then gets ticket money etc. From the article posted that is what racistball had in place

$2m would only be a host fee, The deal would have things like NRL keeps ticket money, A % of bar sales etc

What was the ave ticket price for magic Round?

$70?. 135k x $70 = $9.6m

Corporate boxes is another few million

When Suncorp was making a play for the GF, Reportedly they could make as much for the NRL due to great deals for bar takings.

Why wouldn't that apply for Magic Round? The overall money the NRL make would be way over $10m on that scale
