To play devils advocate in 2024 Lions significantly led dolphins in:
Crowd avg (21.6k v 29k)
Membership number (35k v 63.2k)
Commercial revenue (21.5m v 37.5mill)

Only commercial area Dolphins led, and by a long way, was in tv audience for games

interesting how these AFL expansion clubs have so many members, but crowds that are less than half the number and pitiful TV audience.

When a club like GWS claims it has 30k members but only 9k turn up to games regularly, something is not mathing.

I can definitely see them giving a few freebies to kids, but the AFL have always had more members than crowds for most of their clubs. Look at the Swans, they have nearly 73.000 members but their crowds are no where near that.

Even on the NRL v AFL comparison. … I was expecting the results to be more like NZ - 93/7 … it looks like the results for UK got edited to 67/33 but even this seems unders..
Australian Expats - spy the big dropoff in 2020.

AFL state expats much more likely to follow while they're living over there, from my experience.

NRL is also made up of Expats (lower percentage) + a growing interest from actual genuine UK based people. See the trend.

Was talking about Google Trends and last weekend showed Dolphins ahead of Lions for general interest in QLD on Google Trends. If you want to use membership numbers as a measuring stick I'm guessing it means the Giants and Eels are on par with one another when it comes to supporter base size?

Dolphins are already ahead of the Lions in terms of general interest in QLD too, despite the Lions winning a premiership while the Dolphins have yet to play finals.

Lions have the Titans covered for general interest in QLD though so I guess that's something for them to hang their hat on.
Dolphins - real QLD sports club with history

Lions - a Victorian that moved to QLD and pretends to be a Queenslander

Canberra members and also fans from other teams buy membership for cheap finals tickets..and they hand out then for free at Auskick lol

They good at chasing up members and ex members. Like college donors in the states or Mormons.

It was a merger similar to St George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers merger.

That was originnaly a joint venture. Fitzroy were stripped of their IP - Logos, Nickname, Colours and 8 players - but Fitzroy played no further part in the AFL Lions. Fitzroy currently play in the VAFA.

Lions and Suns game had TV ratings of 33k in QLD despite both teams being top 4 and I know people who got free tickets to the game.
It's not even strategised free tickets with the Suns home games. They just post these around everywhere. You just need the code then you can book 4 free tickets. I feel sorry for anyone who actually pays for tickets or memberships.
