I’ve explained this multiple times, the NRL and NSWRL royally botched Norths being booted from the comp as they didn’t give them the Newtown treatment. They left them with their district intact instead of carving it up and giving it to neighbouring teams and refused to make a definitive call on their future. As a result, they’ve given Norths false hope after false hope and allowed them to exist in this weird zombie form, ambulance chasing after struggling teams and putting their hand up for re-entry time and time again, only to be repeatedly denied.
If Manly, or the Roosters or whoever else tried to claim Norths’ district as their own and started sinking major money into it, they’d have been running the risk of the NRL saying the Bears are the next team back in and the Norths district will remain part of their official territory, rendering any investment a waste of money. Even now, despite 20 years of false dawns, it still remains a (completely idiotic) possibility that a Bears team will be readmitted into the comp and they’ll retain the North Sydney district as part of their territory. The game’s governing bodies could have knocked this on the head 20 years ago by making a definitive call on the Bears’ future and by having a vision and a roadmap for the area, instead we’ve had 20 years of rot and directionless idiocy.
