It's not a dump at all.

It's a manicured ground with a grass hill and grand stands in an affluent area of a rich city.

Go to a real dump and get back to me.

Local cricket grounds have manicured grounds and grass hills. We are not in the Village Green Preservation Society.

In essence, I have been to it. It’s fine for junior sport or local competitions/NSW Cup but it’s not good enough for a premier competition. You can disagree if you like but there wouldn’t many professional sporting competitions (at least with any claim of popularity) which would play at such grounds.

Who cares what other sports do?

We have our own culture.

It's not hurting anything to play a few games a year there.

There's big stadiums too. Go to the hundreds of games there if you like

A lot of people like a hill and grass and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's not third world or any of that ridiculous hyperbole.

The culture argument doesn’t wash.

Eventually things will come to a head because the money or investment needed to maintain it to a certain level for professional competitions is not forthcoming; or the commercial needs of the sport outweighs any tradition or nostalgia argument. It is already coming to this point in any case - the government is obviously not wanting to invest in further upkeep (funding priorities) and it is not like there also aren’t stadiums more suitable or commercially viable for the professional league.

As I said just because it shouldn’t be used for NRL doesn’t mean it won’t ever or shouldn’t ever be used. It’s perfectly suitable for second tier competitions like the way Henson Park or North Sydney Oval is used.

I agree TV deals should just be cash, that is what pays the bills
agreed, contra is bs padding.

vlandys responsible for the worse tv deal in the games history.

gap between tv deals (cash and contra). All in AFL’s favour
2008 $73mill (game under conflicted ownership)
2013 $25mill first arlc deal
2017 $31mill the smith gate deal
2023 $21mill vlandys new deal
2025 $191mill afl new deal

Was also unsuccessful in getting ANZ stadium upgraded. Then pivoted to local grounds and failed to secure the $800m in government funding.

I’m pretty sure Gil never lost $800m in government funding for the AFL. A man like Gil would have had these government funding deals put in writing - not bloody hand shake deals.

Then goes on TV and starts whinging like an amateur about “ya can’t trust the premiers word” cause he wants to give the funding to flood relief.

Honestly, it’s a clown show atm.

Over 2020-27 period AFL gonna have at least $500m more in media money than NRL. Including the $800m in government funding that vanished over night cause they got nothing in writing - that’s $1.3b worse off under current administration.

Imagine the uproar in the daily tele and on here if Greenberg lost $1.3b in media and government funding.

Meanwhile, AFL has all states covered for stadia with quality negotiations with federal and state governments. They’ll get a new $1b stadium at the Gabba cause of the Olympics and they won’t even be paying a cent.

Tip my cap to Gil. Smart professional man that brings everyone on the journey with him. Does it all with out tantrums in the media, no self adulation, no carrying on like an amateur out of his depth and no making handshake deals.

Sure, in war time (covid 2020) NRL needed a PVL type. Someone that understood bio security from years in racing and had the balls to get the game going again. Well done for that. Was the gloating and self adulation over the top? Sure, but at least he delivered and gave the game hope in that dire 2020.

Then he changed the rules and brought in 6 again. Something I still despise. The product was fine as it was. But again, ok - let it go cause he got the game going in 2020. However, six again is still a dumb rule I’ll never like and was brought in without consultation.

Now we in 2022, it’s peace time. Do we really need a war time leader? I don’t think so. And the proof is in the decision making since July 2020 which has lead to at least $500m less in media revenue between 2020-27 and lost government funding of $800m. Seriously, no competent administration loses $1.3b in media and government funding.

Going forward, the NRL now needs a Gil type that’s extremely experienced, professional and purely focused on building great relationships with government. Especially, if ALP win next election in NSW in March 2023.

According to various sources, then NRL chief executive Todd Greenbergand his then chief commercial officer, Andrew Abdo, presented a paper to the commission in late March strongly advising against signing a new broadcast deal during the pandemic.

something stinks at nrlhq!
Was todd still there at the time? I reckon if it was anyone with a paper, it would be abdo, but as if he would confirm it now, when the deals been done, and he runs the show... Pvl is probably right tho, until the 18th team comes in, and theres an extra game to sell the Nrl won't be matching whatever the Alf does, plus throw in the nrlw, where there's set to be more teams soon, there's a difference in the numbers of content and players/clubs between the two codes, and even if the amounts are close, nrl still has growth to go and international presence, where Alf can only go so far,

does anyone have the closest figures, without the contra involved and can divide that into amount of players/clubs between each code?

he was there at the first part of covid. He “resigned” in apr 2020 at the behest of ch9 who wanted a bigger reduction than he was willing to give. note how Vlandys comments he wasnt there when negotiating with fox, a classic denial that may be true but that isnt to say they didn’t table a paper with the commision before negotiations began.

re the figures both codes are cloudy so you can’t really tell. Afl you will eventually see in annual reports but nrl has buried them so you will never see.

afl $473mill for 2 years then $643mill for 7 years
nrl $402mill for 5 years.

those are the only certain figures. Afl includes telstra component which isn’t tv rights, nrl includes radio rights which aren’t included in afls. Contra spilt is anyones guess. My estimate for nrl contra is $30-35mill based on last deal and what we know.

Yeah too hard to narrow down the main difference, what if we pretend they both are on 400million regardless, then divide it by the clubs, then by no. of players, and grants... then see the difference in the costs to run either an NRL/NRLW club vs an AFL/AFLW club
im fairly sure AFL have more staff plus way more 1st grade clubs and thus more games played... which when it boils it down they are getting more... whether that means its even or worth more is a different story

Somehow I think they are more than fine. They have essentially assigned us to secondary status with this deal

If you read the article, I struggle to see how anybody could defend him.

I’m also glad that at least one journalist (a good Hunter boy at that) has the cojones and care for the game (rather than caring about the scratching the back to toe the company line) to actually ask the questions.

There’s a confidentiality clause in all our agreements. What does it matter anyway? It’s the net profit that counts. It’s what you distribute to the clubs and players. We’ve distributed more to them in the history of the game. Our revenues next year are the highest they’ve ever been. You can’t take one aspect and then ignore the rest.

This is the main thing, We don't need to know what it is as long as there is growth is all that matters.

Glad PVL called out Telstra being included in their deal, This part is often overlooked by media reporting
