It certainly helped them attracting attendances with many of their teams closely bunched together. Thats why centralised stadiums works for aerial ping pong in Melbourne.

In the NRL, hypothetically, if Newtown and Norths were still in the comp, then there home ground could've been Allianz, due to close proximity of NSO and Henson Park.
thats one of those great myths lol. AFL clubs draw support from all over the city, not just their namesake suburb. Carlton membership 80k, Carlton population 7k.

7 of sydneys 9 clubs are 20km or less from Commbank or Allianz. Just saying lol.

So based on the afl they should bring back Newtown Annandale and university

Haha not sure about University but Newtown or Norths probably made more sense than introducing/keeping Manly or Cronulla but meh it has been done now.

I think the idea though that killing unviable clubs in Sydney when they were too many is the only reason why League has struggled is much too simplistic.

Im guessing the Storms 40k members must be ex Swans and Lions fans who've flocked to them as there is no AFL club now in their suburb? There must be some strong RL clubs based in those AFL no go areas in Melbourne now?

or maybe we should look at how you can sell a sport to a new market, because after all isnt that what you are arguing is impossible?

Those sports literally sell themselves to new markets without adding teams in those markets but.

Like, the EPL isn't popular in Southwest China because there's a side in Chengdu.

It's got nothing to do with putting teams in places lol.

Who said that?

It is the inevitable conclusion one can make from all of the excuses people make on here.

It is all too hard apparently, notwithstanding the game has increased support since we expanded the competition outside of NSW. Perhaps we might do the same if we go to Perth and Adelaide and make it a truly national competition. Sure it will be a challenge but nothing worthwhile is easy

I have been arguing consistently on the stadium thread that the NRL does need at least a couple of suburban grounds. Having all nine teams play out Accor, Commbank and Allianz wouldnt work because some of the teams are spread out.

Yeah maybe.

However, NSO and Henson are actually further apart than Lakeside Stadium and Windy Hill, which were like the two furthest away grounds of the original VFL clubs 😂

I am happy for those areas to have teams, When they get the junior development in order how they do that is the question

That’s because they have evolved far beyond the NRL or any other Australian sport, nevertheless it all starts from somewhere. Do you think any sport that has a national and in turn an international presence ever grew to that level by ignoring big markets in their own country?

Do you think say soccer/cricket/baseball/tennis or any other sport, or indeed any large product outside of sport, ever made it despite saying to themselves “you know what, we won’t try and market this over (insert place) because they might not go for it’. It’s a self defeating argument.

Sports like football were massive before marketing ghouls starting whispering sweet nothings into sports administrators ears mate.

But it is the epitome of a chicken and egg argument. You can’t grow anything without first showing an interest in something and investing in it. It’s literally impossible otherwise

What 18 year old would move across the country and leave their family behind. When they can stay in the local area?

That is going to be the issue with those areas in the comp and why a QLD was rightfully the next choice

You'd be surprised. Way back in 1992, when Perth seemed a million miles from rest of Australia, the Reds signed 50 plus young players to come over and play in local comp with a view to having a shot at first team. Its a global world, people move around for work opportunities every day. In the early days of our Sg Ball we would regularly have 4 or 5 U18's come over from NZ or East coast for a shot at being in the shop window. Why are kids signing to Dolphins from NSW teams SG ball?

That wasn’t the point I made. Anything that is that large became that large because of entrepreneurial spirit, investment and a belief in their product. They didn’t become successful because they were timid or conservative

Jesus Wept

A bunch of fancy lads went abroad and kicked a ball about dude on the back of empire.

These weren't weirdos describing "product" or engaging in "entrepreneurial spirit."

Dolphins have so far signed 28/32 players from other teams. Just saying.

Any new team will have a stack of imports.
Their starting pack next year will have 4 guys over 30 in it, Titans were good early on but fell away.

Redcliffe made the GF in QCup and QCup u20's. Those guys are the ones that will refresh the squad when the older guys leave, That is why new teams need the pathways in place

How did he fail on rule changes ?
He successfully got rid of the blight of wrestling which nobody else could do
Do you even watch the game? There is as much wrestling as there has been in the last 5-10 years.

and when teams were cheating he adapted the six again so it wouldn’t work
Oh you mean when teams were exploiting rules that he brought in because he did so with no consultation or any reason to do so.

It's also quite funny you neglect the abundant evidence that teams are still exploiting the modified six again rules. Canberra in particular would like to have a word. Giving away six again whilst defending the goal line is still being used without fear.

Or how about teams intentionally going offside to defend scrums?

Yeah, definitely not still being exploited.

captains challenge has been excellent

try again
As for the captain's challenge, it's amusing that he is going to claim this when:
1. It was not unique to sport, and was a borrowed idea.
2. The work behind the scenes were already underway before PVL's commencement as chairman on 30 October 2019. In fact, the media release has Greenburg and Annesley (no sign of PVL) and reference to the fan survey conducted in August 2019.

Despite this, remember how the captain challenge could only be for calls that resulted in a structured restart of play, but that disappeared all of sudden to allow a challenge at full time (but not one for the same call 30 seconds earlier).

I note that there is no mention of:
- Going back to one referee being a failure so much that even public supporters of the change have come out and said it needs to be reverted (which is strange because you said the wrestle was gone?).
- Last minute changes to MRC and Judiciary system that meant players could consistently offender with no fear of suspension as long as it was a grade 1 offence.
- 20/40 rule and 2 point field goal - why?
