Peter Dutton has proposed betting advertising be restricted but prime minister says review into the issue is under way

Anthony Albanese has declared he finds the barrage of betting advertisements during sporting matches “annoying” after opposition leader Peter Dutton proposed a ban because “footy time is family time”.

In an interview with Guardian Australian, the prime minister said he would not directly comment on any plans to ban this advertising, saying there was a review under way.

Back in the day, I did work experience at an ad agency when cigarettes were still advertised. The clients presented a brief that stated the target market were 25 year olds. Then verbally told the creative team that the market was actually teenagers but couldn’t obviously put that in print. This is the sort of people you’re dealing with here. While I was in advertising, the agency I was at had Aristocrat poker machines and the client proudly went into detail about the research they put into designing the ‘Queen of the Nile’ artwork and how its alluring image was designed to hook you in. That’s why it was often placed outside pubs to get people into the VIP lounge. Dunno how effective it was but make no mistake, these are horrible merkins and I have no problems with government restrictions. Plus their ads shit me.

Good quality interstate racing is complimentary rather than competitive. But there's no doubt the arms race is over.”

They`ll be cracking open the champagne (non-alcoholic for V`landy`s) at N.S.W. Racing after reading that little admission.
