Not really, they scout for the best talents, and buy them in, they don't want to be schlepped with the low end of a draft picks, coz they always seem to do well..
Plus a draft would lead to clubs spooning for the best talents on the next draft... that doesn't seem like a competition I want to watch

Having a rookie draft helps clubs with poor juniors like the roosters

A draft is stupid. Let the clubs & Players decide what happens. If anything the Clubs should be given an incentive to develop their own juniors.
Or if we are going full Topball thinking, maybe each club has to have a certain amount of their own developed Players in their Rosters. That would light a fire under a few clubs.

The proposal for a draft and an under-21s competition is currently under consideration by the NRL Pathways Steering Committee (PSC).

This committee includes key figures such as Queensland Rugby League head Ben Ikin, Penrith's football chief Matt Cameron, Melbourne Storm's general manager Frank Ponissi, and Roosters coach Trent Robinson, all tasked with evaluating how to strengthen development programs across the league.

Cameron said so but they prefer age limits on when players can get managers etc before they go down the draft route

I think the issue is clear and effective pathways.

NRL should have a direct player pathway from nearly anywhere in the world. These pathways
should come with a slight salary cap discount. ie. If you draw a player from your pathway, it is a
10 percent salary cap discount.

Some international zones could be divided. For instance. Fiji is a large playing pool. It could be divided.

For instance.

Roosters - Easts territory - Central Coast - USA

Their agreement with each area would come both with responsibility (finance etc) and opportunity (discount on salary cap forever)

Titans - Gold Coast / Northern Rivers - Northern Territory (they should establish a NT Titans in the Q Cup)

Dragons - St George / Illawarra - Tonga - etc.

Bulldogs - Dogs territory / Fiji

Nah. Roosters model recruits some of the best talent from matts/ball/flegg. They match this with bringing in elite first grader as neededs to nurture/mentor the youngsters through. If they are having to give up the kids to the draft at 18-20 whatever its ruins the whole thing.

Draft is stupid and will never happen under the current setup anyway.

NRL boss Andrew Abdo believes the Pacific Championships will grow into the “biggest sporting tournament in our region”, as international rugby league proves to be a ratings bonanza.

This masthead can reveal that all three Kangaroos matches out-rated the Wallabies in the Bledisloe Cup against the All Blacks this year.

While Australia’s two clashes against Tonga, including Sunday’s final, attracted a total of 2 million viewers across free-to-air and Fox Sports, overall ratings were also up 13.5 per cent on last year’s tournament.

“We’re seeing a great response from the fans through attendance and viewership. With a meaningful calendar and some consistency, this is something I think can grow into the biggest sporting tournament in our region,” NRL chief executive Abdo said.

“To get over a million people watching consistently shows it can be a big part of our calendar.

“We also had hundreds of thousands of people streaming it in Papua New Guinea.”

Abdo said the governing body was committed to playing the three-week championships after the NRL grand final after scrapping mid-season Test matches in 2022.

“It is in the right place, playing rugby league in late October early November is the sweet spot,” Abdo said.

“The beauty is, there is not too much other sport. It’s a chance for us to really own this period and win over new fans across the region.

Australia will tour England in 2025 with Samoa to replace the Kangaroos in the Championships. It is anticipated that a clash between Tonga and Samoa, who also have a large community in western Sydney, would draw a crowd of 50,000 people - the biggest Test crowd in Australia in almost 50 years.

It’s understood New Zealand will host both of their Test matches against island nations next year.
