Not true. Crowds are the highest and second highest in their respective markets. And FTA ratings become less and less relevant as each year passes - the eyeballs and dollars come from pay TV.

Their crowds, membership and sponsorship revenue is higher than every NRL club besides Broncos.

If you don’t think that the Swans and Lions have done well and add significant value to their code, then there is no point in having NRL teams in Melbourne or Perth, whose clubs would dream of being as big as the Swans or Lions. If not for the success of those clubs, we would not have NRL clubs in Melbourne or Perth.

AFL is obviously never going to dominate Sydney or Queensland, but surely nobody could argue that those clubs have not done well. Storm is on the same trajectory, but a decade or two behind. Perth will probably catch up more quickly as the market is less crowded there.
yep, sometimes its fun to pay out the other code, especially when it engages in hyperbole but it's looney to think the Lions and Swans have made no in roads but the Storm are a big deal in Melbourne

Hahaha TV audiences are not relevant? Hahaha what are the TV ratings for the Lions and Swans on Fox Sports?

Lions crowds were up around the 35k mark in 2005 after their premiership runs, been a while since they've averaged consistently over 30k.

But I guess smaller crowds and pathetic TV ratings don't matter right?

Are the rules different ?
Last I knew (7 or 8 years ago), they're almost the same. League Tag had a bonus point zone. I don't recall there being other differences, but I'm sure there were probably another one or two minor ones that I don't remember.

The rugby league tsar has assured PNG prime minister James Marape the team will make the top eight in its first year in 2028, a deadline which V’landys said was “absolutely” going to be met.

V’landys shouldn’t be making statements such as this considering the position he holds

At this point everyone knows games are rigged, so why not openly admit it.

This is the statement of a raving lunatic.

PNG will be the weakest team in the NRL for some time.

If this was typed in all caps on social media, you could mistake it for Trump.

Given the already high crime rate in PNG, what would be the chances of PVL safely walking down the streets of Port Moresby if they don't make the 8 after these assurances?

Heard the exact same thing said about Redcliffe.
That was some Fox bullshit,no-one from QLD believed that shit.

Apparently they didn't recruit any "marquee" players, eventhough they had Origin players like Hammer, Kaufusi and internationals like Bromwich.

Regardless, they didn't make the Eight either. And you would have to be a fairly aggressive drug user to consider living in Brisbane the equivalent of Port Moresby.

So its a f**king stupid thing for Vlandy's to say, and other sports administrators would lose there job over such a statement.

Geez best hope China doesnt come in with a better offer!

V’landys said there was a clause in the deal allowing it to be terminated “if there’s a termination of the security agreement” between the two countries.

You are right about PNG. They are going to massively struggle. Perth is going to have a tougher time than the Dolphins and PNG is another 5 rungs below that.

What's with all the concern about PVL grandstanding though? Who cares? If PNG is anything but a steaming pile of shit in its first 5 years then that is an absolutely massive achievement. The bar is set very low here and it doesn't change because PVL is talking it up.

Can you show me the direct quote? It's only 'reported' in that article but there's no direct quote from V'Landys.
“We want to get some of the best players because I've assured the Prime Minister that they will be in the Top 8 in the very first year, so we're going to make sure we get some of the good players to come over here."
