They obsess over trying to take Brisbane over and they think they will. They definitely thought they were going to take Western Sydney over after getting some big crowds to Stadium Australia and they went in there acting like smart arses. They are spending a fortune in Brisbane. NRL still needs to get it shit together up there a good bit but there would be little things that would make the AFL powers that be spit their cornflakes out for sure.
When Brisbane 3 comes on stream after the Dolphins have been bedded in properly will send fumbleball in Queensland into a tailspin, and that will be before the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane.

Two states, AKA 55% of the population - lol

This favorite line of our rivals also conveniently leaves out the fact that RL has more than a reasonable presence in Auckland and Melbourne.
Yes they forget that we have a bigger audience that watches nrl in Victoria than afl has in nsw. As evidenced from the grand final ratings for both codes this year and last year that featured the Storm and Swans.

But because the afl decided to bank roll a couple reject projects in nsw and qld they’ve already stitched up nsw and qld as afl states and ignore that league is played and consumed in Victoria

I do wonder what goes through the average AFL fans mind when they're scrolling through the channels after another season of absolute dominance that has Rugby league reduced to a code in crisis.. only to find the Kangaroos playing England in front of 65k fans in London..
Surely that can't be right.. confused look..

But, but… their all Australian team will be playing after the GF, as they named a team.
You wouldn’t name a team if you weren’t playing another team, or that’d be silly, even delusional

Wouldn’t the 60m licence fee for PNG alone have pushed revenues beyond 800m this year? At that’s without any other growth.

I assumed the NRL would have received it since clubs got their first payment this year.
Blundell said the department had so far given the Australian Rugby League Commission $66.6 million of its funding package.

She said $250 million was being used specifically for the new NRL team, the PNG Chiefs, while the rest would be spent on grassroots development.

About 50 per cent of the remaining $350 million would be spent on grassroots in Papua New Guinea, and the rest is supposed to be spent across Samoa, Fiji and Tonga.

Are these politicians not completely missing the point? Why would the NRL have agreed to the PNG team if a lot of the money went to support rugby union in the pacific.

If they want the money to be going to union in the pacific then they should set up a separate proposal, rather than divert funds away from their intended use.

oh no, how unfair!!

it is almost as bad as when union did a deal with the Nazis to take money from RL.

Basically the same thing, really. I hope they get justice……

The Australian govt has been funding the Fiji super rugby team for years

It has completely missed the point of the funding. They aren't giving them money for nothing, it's buy influence.

If they pump massive grassroots funding into the PI, all these countries will have a heap of players (and a team in PNG's case) playing in an Australian team week in, week out for 3/4 of the year.

If they turn around and inject a shitload into Union, they are just funding players to go to France, Japan, and NZ. Not a whole lot of Australian influence.

I’ve suggested in the past renaming the code Pac-Ball or Pacific League Football or some such.

I posted in the PNG thread in the expansion forum about the Senator asking these questions on behalf of Rugby Union, with video of the estimates exchange:

She may or may not have links to union, but her socials certainly indicate a keen interest in the sport.
