QLD derby's aren't really much of a thing though, it's just a derby with the Broncos that it adds.
Between Redcliff,GC and Cowboys don't rate any better than an interstate game. QLD is different, we like all our sides, when they play each other, it's more a shame one has to lose.
In time that'll change but for now, it's kinda meh.
20 Queensland derbys would take a lot of column inches and media coverage away from the AFL, and would probably be a huge set back for the AFL putting another club in Queensland.

We can (NRL) do/produce Thursday night football, just use the same contractors and part pay for a different feed or employ them outright to produce for Amazon, plus why not give them games on subscription which are sold to free Tv, again part pay contractor so Amazon has two games with special emphasis on Thursday.
NEP already produce the coverage for both Fox and Channel 9. Adding another party like Amazon wouldnt be a stretch

Agreed, the definition of a derby is different here than down south, but I get where he's going. For me it goes two ways:
1. More derbies means more 'must watch' NRL action, and
2. More Queensland teams means more times/games of non-Broncos games I'd definitely be watching. I'd rather watch Ipswich/GC/Reddy vs. anyone than Tigers vs Cronulla, even though I'm a Broncos fan.

You think 500,000 people will pay for Amazon just for one game

When FTA has the same production?

I'm a Titan and exactly the same. But I'd be excited by a second NZ team more than another QLD one.
My QLD itch is satisfactory for now. Like to see more expansion.

But you aren't just getting one game. You are getting free delivery on products through Amazon, and the Amazon streaming service as well. I could see them doing something like this as a loss leader to get people engaged further into their services.

These are a few years old.

As of 2024, They have 4.5m subscribers here or 1/5 of the population

That is without dropping $50m on 1 NRL game a week

While I agree that this quick maths won't be accurate

An NRL game you can get 1m people.

Using the 1/5 calculation

200k of the NRL average audience already have it, if as said above the game is on FTA as well then it just doesn't add up.

PVL loves money and wants international expansion, if it was viable for these streaming companies. The deal would be signed instantly

I think if you have conferences with all the QLD teams plus PNG, that is one that will get more of a rivalry going. I'm sure conferences are coming once we get 20 teams.

I think it's just more about history, the more time goes by, the chances these teams have of getting in each others way in a hurtful way.
If Titans meet Dolphins in a final that's decided by a late penalty.. they steel a star player from the other..
At this point, neither have even been successful, so it more of a common goal as opposed to a rivalry.

Ben Ikin feels a lot different …he is pushing another team from Brisbane and seems to carry some weight with the powers that be …. I don’t see any one equivalent pushing NZ2…. The Warriors are against it

the motivations are irrelevant… he is a loud voice NZ doesn’t have …. They also don’t appear to have anyone that wants to put up some money … I keep saying until that happens they wont even be at the start line in PVLs mind

It's literally his job lol.

There was plenty of money put up for Christchurch, 300 million dollars in investment from memory.

Lol righto

Heard similar straight out of Lowe’s mouth recently …we know PVL and Abdo brushed all the NZ applicants when the expansion bids were happening… I doubt they are walking away from $360m when Perth got in for a fraction of this..: who is putting up the money?

Who cares. Team 20 isn't going to be looked at for years.
The NRL wanted Perth and the Bears because it was the most favorable for the TV deal. PNG 600 million in a country of 11 million.
Those teams need time to bed in.

The Warriors play ANZAC day game in Wellington this year, then play at the brand new Te kah in Christchurch as well, following year they have SOO in Auckland and just today announced that Origin eligible players can also represent NZ.
NZ TV deal is also coming up..

Lots of water to flow under the bridge before team 20. PVL will likely talk up a Brisbane team and that might happen, which will be good! But an Ipswich franchise may also be used to drive up the cost of a bid for NZ which will be better.

The game is going international and the more footprint it has, the better it will be for international streaming rights.
