“Club bosses want NRL head of football Graham Annesley and head of pathways and performance Brock Schaefer to attend their next meeting as they look to vent their frustrations over the speed of the game and injuries resulting from fatigue.

Sport Confidential understands they also want some answers regarding the scheduling of the additional game that will be played next season when the competition expands to 18 teams with the addition of Perth.

The more pressing issue is the speed of the game, the proliferation of six-agains and rising injury fears, which led club officials to seek an urgent meeting with the NRL to address the matter.

It was initially suggested they discuss the issue at Magic Round but there was a view that it needed to be addressed as soon as possible. Therefore, Annesley and Schaefer plan to attend their next meeting in a fortnight.

This masthead on Wednesday morning revealed the impact the rule changes were having on games this season – the competition is averaging 50 points per match through six rounds, which would be the highest on record if it continues down the current path.

One chief executive who spoke to Sport Confidential on Wednesday said that the clubs harboured deep concerns over changes that had been made given the NRL was coming off one of the most exciting – and watched – seasons in the code’s history.

Club bosses also want some clarity over the consistency of six-again calls and the impact they are having on the outcome of games.”

averaging 50 points a game lmao

The issue is that, if you commit a "boots and all" tackle, more often than not the tackled player starts trying to rise to their feet for a quick play the ball, as more often than not, the tackled player has landed on his belly. Even before the introduction of the 6 Again, you'd see a player tackjed by one bucking to get up, and looking like they were being held down would be penalised. Even when they tried to reward a boots and all tackle by giving them longer to get out of the ruck, it was counter intuitive to how it was viewed by all and sundry both fans and media alike.

It was that attitude that was a primary influence in the advent of gang tackling and looking to "turtle" the tackled player.

One of the many good things about 1 on 1 tackles is the smaller players are often good at them eg Chris Sandow was a good traditional legs tackler but was a terrible wrestler so just got exploited. The main good thing is they look a lot better to the fans than gang tackles.

Instead of f**king around with the rules further, maybe they could just, you know, change the rules back to the way they were last year where we had the closest most exciting season on record. Everybody was happy and we had the highest ratings in history.

If the response to this is to change the kick-off rule then we are well and truly f**ked.
I have zero faith they are going to make the right decision.

I'm not against changing the rules as Rugby League has always been an evolving sport but I wish they would trial the rules in lower grades first. That way we know if they work or not or you can rub the kinks out without affecting the top end product. The disrupter rule is the perfect example.

In saying that I love the six again rules, maybe just dial it back a touch.

The problem isn't the rules, it's the refs. Especially the bunker refs.

Youve got rule change derangement syndrome.
Interesting that we have had more rule changes in the last 5 years than ever and as you said we had the closest most exciting season on record as shown with the fan reception. But you call it "f**king around with the rules further".

Its just how it is. You have to ban offloads to remove it and at that point its a different sport
Going back to 5 metres would get rid of the wrestle as it would be redundant and the cost would outweigh the benefit (I mean a gang wrestle or gang tackle).
There are many ways actually such punishing 3 man tackles.

Penrith wouldn't conceded a try in a season under the 5m rule
