REPRESENTATIVE halfback Peter Wallace is confident of making a successful comeback from the serious injury which devastated his 2009 season with Brisbane.
Wallace snapped the bone just above his left ankle in the closing minutes of Brisbane's qualifying final win over St George Illawarra.
Brisbane were unable to cope with his loss which forced Darren Lockyer to shift to halfback against eventual premiers Melbourne a week later, a selection gamble which didn't pay off.
"It's still a bit stiff, it only came out of the boot three weeks ago," said Wallace, ice heavily packed around his left ankle.
"Once the tightness eases around the joint I'll be able to get back into full training although it could be six months before it's totally healed."
While Wallace was left shattered and distraught by the injury which ended his season, the NSW Origin representative is confident there won't be any mental scars going into 2010.
He said on Tuesday his focus was totally on wearing the No.7 jumper for Brisbane despite an unexpected challenge from former Parramatta halfback Tim Smith, a surprise face at pre-season training this week.
"The plan is to be back to full skills by Christmas if not just after Christmas," said Wallace.
"I could have come back to training a bit sooner but I wanted to ease my way back and make sure nothing went wrong between now and the start of the season."
Wallace, who for the second time in as many years suffered the disappointment of being dropped from the NSW Origin side, could not have had a tougher end to 2009.
He'd been a pivotal player in Brisbane's late charge into the finals after it looked at one stage after the Origin series like the club could miss the end of year action for the first time in 18 seasons following the departure of super coach Wayne Bennett.
"It was very tough not finishing the year with the boys after the way we came back from where we were," he told AAP.
"It was pretty hard missing that last game, I don't know if it would have made a difference.
"But it's behind me now.
"That was last year and we've got a fairly new looking squad this year with a few players gone.
"The beauty about a new season is you can make a fresh start but I'll be focusing on the Broncos first and foremost and if something else comes down the track (Origin) that would be good."
Meanwhile former Melbourne Storm premiership winning prop Scott Anderson has declared his intentions to nail down a starting spot in Brisbane's pack.
Anderson, who grew up on the Gold Coast following the deeds of former Broncos props Shane Webcke and Petero Civoniceva, said he felt privileged to be with a club which had enjoyed so much success with young forwards.
"They know how to breed props here," he said.
"There's definitely an opportunity here to concrete a starting position, that's why I'm here."
