Petero wants to inspire Panthers

October 29, 2007 - 5:17PM

Star Penrith recruit Petero Civoniceva is hoping his arrival will not only benefit the NRL club's blossoming juniors but also help the Panthers' underachieving senior players lift their game.
Civoniceva arrived at CUA Stadium on Monday to meet his new teammates after 10 years with Brisbane.
The hulking prop said he was confident he could play a large role in helping the Panthers rebuild after they collected the wooden spoon in Matthew Elliott's first season as coach.
Veterans such as Tony Puletua, Trent Waterhouse and Luke Priddis have dipped in form since playing a pivotal role in the Panthers' 2003 premiership win.
Asked whether his arrival could help inspire those players back to the sort of form that earned them past representative honours, Civoniceva said: "That could be the case. Obviously there's a lot of guys here that have played some rep football and hopefully in my role here, I can do that.
"A big thing in my decision to come down here was the strength of the forward pack they have and hopefully I can add a few different view points on how I do things and they can teach me something as well."
Civoniceva was also excited about the chance to work with the club's talented junior group.
"We've seen some of the best juniors in rugby league come out of this district, so hopefully, I can have an impact there in my time down here," he said.
Coach Elliott is confident Civoniceva's influence will be huge, judging by the reaction from his players when the club landed the big man.
"I was stunned. I was obviously very chuffed at being able to secure a player of his quality, but the player reaction to it was something that really did blow me away," Elliott said.
"They're all looking forward to playing footy with him."
Despite his credentials, Elliott said Civoniceva was not guaranteed a place in starting line-up every week, in line with the policy that resulted in seasoned veterans like Puletua and Priddis dropped at various stages last year.
"I think what we have to stress is that now at this club, after debuting ten guys in first grade and building our first grade up from a very narrow squad to a very wide squad, is that they're all under the pump to hold their position," he said.
"And I would like to think that Petero sees himself in that position as well and when you know someone is a competitor like he is, I've got no doubt that's how he sees it.
"He's going to have to play his best football to hold his spot."
Fellow recruit Joe Williams was another who would have to fight for a spot, Elliott said.
The former Souths halfback is locked in a battle with former Canberra junior Josh McCrone and Keith Peters, while Elliott said fullback Jarrod Sammutt, who impressed in place of injured Rhys Wesser late last season, would also be trialled at halfback in the pre-season.
"I thought Jarrod, as an individual, had a fairly large impact on the team at the end of the year through the way he played," Elliott said.
"The character and the conduct of his performances certainly impacted on me.

It sounds logical to dish out uncertainty amongst the players over their positions, but I wonder if some players would respond better by knowing that they are definately going to play in the next 3 matches or so.

Should we assume that they will all respond better to negative reinforcement?

I dont know if the Panthers will enough to threaten the 8 as early as next year. I hope so, but I dont know.

Panthers, Roosters & Dragons will all be great to watch this year IMO.

All teams unearthed a few great young talents throughout last season that look like really turning into superstars, plus, all clubs haven't signed to many big names (Panthers picked up Civo, Roosters picked up O'Meley, Dragons re-signed Ryles who was offered LOTS by Knights), & are relying on young teams this year.

Roosters with Perrett, Soliola, Kenny-Dowall, Pearce, the Aubusson brothers, Sa, L Paea, Nuuausala

Penrith with Gordon, Jennings, Blair, Daniella, Tighe, Moors, Grant, Sammut

Dragons with the Morris brothers, Nightingale, Chase, Soward, Lett, Setu, Hunt, Thorby

Teams to watch...the new era for three teams that were relatively powerful at some stage in the past 6 years, only for cap & bad retention decisions to tear them apart. I think they are the three teams to really set the standard in attacking footy over the next few years.

I maybe wrong though.

We are pretty thin in halves. But if Jarrod Sammut gets a shot, he and Rhys Wesser could be seriously damaging to the opposition. Wesser was incredible when working with Preston Campbell, and Sammut is a similar player.

Our main issue isn't options in the halves, so much as proven combinations.

Pretty standard type ''new player at club wants to have big first up impact" type interview.
We see it every year, dime a dozen.

Im tipping panthers for top 5 next year, and dragons will be right up there too, possibly 4. Cant see the roosters getting much better, no better than 10th for mine.

Maybe Elliot is meaning he will keep Petero out of the starting lineup to help him coach the team in the box, maybe throw him a few pointers like:

"hey matty, you could probably put some more people on the field, those 6 guys look pretty tired"

"maybe we should put pritchard back to backrower, the other wingers are laughing at him"

"ill have to check into it, but im pretty sure using weapons is against the rules"

"i think youve had enough bacardi breezers, should i just take over?"

That line about no one is safe is all talk. Barring incredible slumps in form, you won't see Petero Civinoceva being dropped. Michael Jennings is another that would have to play himself out of the jersey well and truly before being dropped.

not only do I believe that Penrith will have a big year but i actually think that they'll make the 4 on the condition that Petero puts a rocket up that under achieving forward which I think he can.

Damn straight!

I don't think the likes of Big T & Priddo could ill-afford to have lapses of slackness as seen this season. With seventy-cents-a-litre firing up the team, there wont be any room for laziness & complacency.

I just hope and pray that Petero doesn't become another Trevor Gilmeister for the Panthers

Petero will lift the Panthers juniors to another level through professionalism and experience. Most teams will target him and give space to the others, even Elliot can't stuff this one up.

he doesn't appear to be the sort of guy that is out to pick his pension cheque and have a holliday, 13 years with Wayne Bennett is better preperation than ever to get your forward going.

Dean Pay did it with us in the late 90's I reckon Petero will do the same.

Well he's certainly picked the wrong club in terms of location if that was the case!!

Pay did turn your club around in the late 90's. Let's hope you're right

Petero giving his best every game he plays is about one thing we are guaranteed next season. Let's just hope his enthusiasm does catch on from the rest of our forwards.

All we need is for Big T and Peanuts to put in half the effort that Petero does. Big T especially has got to be the most dissapointing second rower in the NRL. A frame like his would be unstoppable if he had any heart. Yet he is lucky to run over top of a centre or winger half the time.

Peanuts and Big T firing in the same game?

I'll win the lottery before that happens (and I've never bought a ticket. )

Hopefully Waterhouse goes back to his early season form this year where he was carving teams up.
