I May get shot for this, BUT, i really think that Gould is a quality commentator, not onyl for his knowledge of the game, but his passion. You never hear the same passion for this great game from any other commentators. His addition to the footy show has lifted it to a new level, and im happy to sit there and watch it now.

Well Done Gould Keep It Up...

As a QLDer, it pains me to say this, but Phil Gould is SLOWLY becoming more tolerable. Agreed, have to admire his passion.

I always have liked him and have always said that anybody who grimaces at Phil Gould should come over to New Zealand and sit under the voice of McIvor, Ropati, Halligan and Costigan- you don't know how good you have got it

he's growing all right, like somethign that is malignant

he is so full of cliches he's monotonously boring

the amount of times he says, that should not be penalized, or that should be a try is getting ridiculous, if he had it his was we may as well toss out the rule book and pay tries that look good

he was so bad during SOO 1, I had to turn the volume down

We get them on fox when the warriors play at home. They call the NYC as well so it's a double dose.

its the "cool" thing to hate Phil Gould, but I think deep down we all respect his opinion and admire his footballing brain. Personally, I enjoy listening to what he has to say, and agree with him 99% of the time.

Like him on the footy show. Hate him commentating.

Opinions should NOT be aired during a match. Leave it for the newspaper columns or the talk shows like the roast and the footy show.

I enjoy the Rabs Vs Gus banter.

Gus just needs to let the agendas go. He was much cooler before SL.

I watched Adrian Lam's player profile yesterday. He said he was supposed to play a "SL test" for PNG against NZ when Gus called him and said "don't you dare" while he was in camp. He said he felt shattered when everyone ran out to play and he was left sitting in the changing room. I thought that was pretty selfish of Gus.

I like Phil Gould - always have.

But then I like people with opinions who aren't afraid to air them.

His knowledge of league is excellent and he is right, in my opinion, far more often than he's wrong.

The banter with Rabs is very amusing too.

That's what colour commentators/special comments do...they give opinions. Gould is not a play-by-play commentator.

Well aware of that, look at Sterlo for example for what a good colour commentator should be for Rugby League. Gould takes it to another level, he has his own agendas to push and manipulates it in there. If you were new to Rugby League and watched a match where he is going off over something relatively trivial you'd swear he hated the sport the way he carries on.

In-game commentators should be there to sell the sport not put it down. Although i'll concede Gould is progressively getting better, someone must of tapped him on the shoulder.

Every commentator in any sport gives their opinion during a call. Why should he be any different?

When Phil Gould dissected Origin last night on the Footy Show it was compelling viewing.

I'm one in the camp who reckons there's too much dummy half-running and one-off hit-ups in RL, and in Origin #1 it was around 65% of all plays, but if you can see it in the context of the big plays that the teams are setting up for, you can be a little more forgiving.

In many ways, what happens on the field in Origin and NRL today, when it comes to running these attacking plays, its almost too fast and too complex for the average fan to take in on first viewing. The NFL gets away with that complexity as each play is replayed between "downs". RL can't and doesn't have that.

But this whole area opens up new RL discussions about strategy, tactics and decision-making, provided fans can understand it and start to follow it.

I think NRL Tactics is the right idea of a show, but the way Gould explained it on the Footy Show last night seemed clearer and more interesting - but that may simply have been because it was Origin.

Still, I was impressed by it.

Gould was doing commentary in 1994 for Channel nine and he was brilliant back then. No attacks on the referee, just added his insightful analysis. Not he is very full on and very colourful. Has he been told to be like that, who knows. Still, prefer to listen to him re any topic than the likes of the Johns brothers.

You can't doubt his football brain, but like others have said before, sometimes he has an agenda, and he does seem full of himself at times too, but last night's show was awesome and it's down to his input, imo.
