Thanks for the info tba.

Its definitely a shame the Bears got shafted like that. As a younger fan, I never got to see them in action, so it would be great if they got a gig on the central coast. It should be the first team to come in.

Those 1990s crowds at NSO are a marker as to why consolidation in the fashion it was done was simply geniused. Norths had the numbers to survive in Sydney, and didn't even need to move to the Central Coast. They had the potential to be as financial as the Roosters when you consider the wealth in their catchment.

They should have gone to the SFS and then figured out how to get back to the North Shore.

If they cut a Sydney based league side it goes without saying cut a Sydney based journalist as one less side to report on.

The weak links in Sydney are Wests Tigers, Cronulla, Penrith, Manly. I am never for folding a club but I do think relocation could be a good idea.

Nothing weak about the 'Riff old mate. The largest RL nursery in the world is finally being developed to it's potential. Where are we gunna go? ....and don't say merge with Parra or I may become abusive.

And what happens when James Packer bails out of Souths?

What do Souths do in the Lean years, no leagues club/Business backing the club.

Atm in good times they make some cash but what happens in the bad times.

Even West Tigers have 2 leagues clubs backing them in the lean years.

Week links in Sydney

Dragons, NRL grants in recent times and shrinking leagues club grants.

Manly, a decade of success and still rubbish crowds, rubbish stadia, no leagues club backing in lean years.

Newcastle, in good years a massive club but nothing to stop them from going broke in the lean years.

These are the clubs that struggle for sustainability.

NRL needs to work out what realistically is the min revenue clubs need to be sustainable then decide if it can afford to up the grant to sort them out. Maybe they are going to have to bring in different levels of grant payments like the afl to cover clubs that are never going to have the other funding options to keep them afloat.

What does it cost to run an nrl club and where are the main expenditure areas? Appreciate it varies depending stadium costs/deals etc. but what would be a relaistic bottom line revenue that a club would need to break even? Some clubs not being able to attract full sponsorship portfolios must be a key factor.

Stop it.

Aren't Wests Ashfield the only ones putting into the Wests Tigers merger at the moment (other than the NRL themselves) because Balmain are, putting it gently, f**ked?

And if he did no doubt someone else would buy in, they have built their "brand" and it will be the strength of that which sees them through any lean times on the field. Any club that can get a stadium deal like they have and a 25k membership base plus decent corporate sponsorship portfolio should be able to stand on its own without a leagues club or a sugar daddy.
