Pick a classic NRL match to air on Chooseday Night Football

By staff writers
August 05, 2009

Fox Sports is giving you the chance to play program director, by choosing which classic NRL match you want to see in our new show: Chooseday Night Football.

Every Tuesday night, we will screen one of three great NRL games that are chosen by you voting for your favourite at foxsports.com.au.

Simply select the game you most want to see in the poll, and the match with the most votes by midnight Monday every week will go to air on Fox Sports 2 at 9.30pm (EST) the following night, Chooseday night.

Each week's selections will feature plenty of past and present stars, so get voting and tune in next Chooseday to watch one of the following memorable NRL games.

North Queensland Cowboys v Bulldogs (Round 21, 2002)

In a season that would later turn sour, the front-running Bulldogs headed to Townsville aiming for their 17th straight win. Future Cowboys hero Johnathan Thurston started off the bench in a Dogs side containing Willie Mason, Braith Anasta and Nigel Vagana.

Parramatta v Warriors (Round nine, 2000)

Former Eels five-eighth John Simon paired with Kiwis hero Stacey Jones as the Warriors travelled across the Tasman. Experienced playmakers Jason Smith and Jim Dymock were crucial to a young Parramatta side including players such as Brett Hodgson, Nathan Hindmarsh and Andrew Ryan.

Sydney Roosters v Manly (Round 13, 2005)

What a mix of players - with veterans Terry Hill and Ben Kennedy, rising stars Brett Stewart and Anthony Watmough, plus hard men Adrian Morley and Michael Crocker. Then add the battle of the Monaghan brothers in another chapter of this rivalry that has seen more than 100 matches.

Watching last nights game just reminded me how shocking Manly were back in those years.

It just shows you what a great job Hasler has done to develop them into premiership contenders.

Wonder if it'll be just normal season games or if they'll show Finals and Grand Finals or will they leave that for Finals time.

I have the 1983 and '86 Grand Finals on tape (the '83 one is complete with ads for things like VCR's with "High speed picture finder" and the "New Toyota Corona" etc). Also have a number of season game tapes from 1988-90. Funny seeing Canberra when they were the best team in the comp, and Tigers fans could expect with near certainty to make the finals.

I'll tell you a little more about this game as I was there and will never forget.

It was a top of the table clash and a ground record crowd at the time. fans were in trees and on rooftops outside the ground. Standing room only on the pathways around the place.

The game was topsy turvy and went from side to side. So intense but the thing that will stick in my mind forever was when with a short time to go Steven Humphreys (Wests Tigers new CEO) scored in the corner. Gary Schofield kicked the conversion from the sideline and the crowd went absolutely ballistic. Total strangers were high fiving and hugging everywhere and I have never, ever heard a louder or prouder 'Tigers' chant ever since. The whole feeling was so uplifting.

Sadly the Dragons kicked a penalty goal, then fieldgoal after to win the game but what a day that was!

Did David Brooks (second rower) kick a fieldgoal for the Tigers? I can't remember that bit.
