Daniel Mortimer will become one of the Eels outstanding players...AND people on this forum will be begging for the Club to resign him when his contract expires...MARK MY WORDS.

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

Pete, how would you bring him up though?

Ideally next to a great halfback or 5/8th but we don't have one.

Do you just persist and persist until he does come good? Who is he learning off?

For mine, he doesn't have the technical skills of a half. He has the work ethic, toughness, mental application but how do you teach him that when you don't have a experience half guiding him. A part-time fortnight coaching clinic doesn't seem enough.

Why I think Mannah has gone so well is because he has a number of good props to learn off.

You maybe right but if we don't buy an experienced half, he will not improve when his contract is due as he will have to learn things on his own and come up with solutions on his own.

Maybe its time for the coaching dept to include a specialist half-back on their staff, someone like Jason Taylor to coach all the 1/2 & 5/8 in the club, juniors too, and help with goal-kicking too.

Don't know to be truthful...I know his Uncles, and I have a feeling that he will blossom into something special. The boy is still developing, physically. I'm not prepared to write him off...

Pete, I respect your experience but we will have to agree to disagree. He has a good heart and I reckon he would make a terrific hooker but he isnt a halfbacks left nut.
There is no chance on this wide wide planet that Daniel Mortimer will be a good NRL halfback.

the thing is Pete, how long do you give him? 3 years?

We could suffer 3 years of final-less footy until he learns his trade?

Casper is right, with no experienced halves at the club, a fulltime halves coach is required.

BTW, I don't think Cronk is coming. Why would Melbourne hire Johns as a halves coach this year if

a) Cronk is going to Parra
b) Finch is off to Wigan?

So Cronk is not coming from my deductions.

This is probably not a bad idea really. I think JT could be ideal initially as the halves and goal kicking coach.... Plus, if DA doesnt come up with the goods by the end of next year you have a ready made first grade coach

Johns was hired as halves coach for their U20's halves mainly. But, if he were to be coaching all their halves, why would Melbourne hire a halves coach for Cooper Cronk?

I don't think Cronk will be here either, however hiring Johns to coach their young halves might suggest they are going to play their under 20s half in first grade next year and want Johns to get him ready. Why would they want to play their under 20s half in first grade next year? Maybe they think cronk won't be filling that position.
