Plans to Further Rugby League in the U.S.

I think the Liberty Cup was a good step forward in the development of Rugby League in America, and it is great to hear it maybe repeated next year as well...

Another idea I thought of was two have the two NRL teams who fail to make the Grand Final to play an Exhibition Game a week after the NRL Grand Final in the US. This could follow the AMNRL Grand Final or something.

I know this idea is very unfeasible and unlikely, but I think this could help develop the game over there by allowing the public to witness their own competition Grand Final and some of the best clubs in the world.

Perhaps Great Britain can play a test there next season, in the event of no Tri Nations, or they could even do it on their way over.

USA could also play against France.

It may be too early to start thinking about Tomahawk Tours (hey, that has a damn nice ring to it!) but maybe teams such as the Junior Kangaroos or Qld Emerging Origin could play the odd game there.

The key is to treat it seriously and not as some sort of a junket.

A proper field would be a good start too.

I think the main thing is that they bring more games over there and try to capitalise on what they have started. In '87 I think it was, Queensland and NSW took a '4th' origin match over, but that has been pretty much it until recently. Too wait almost another 20 years before taking a top side over would undo all the good work.

It sounds like their is genuine interest and the American commentator made a great point about the free flowing nature of the game compared to the NFL. Rugby league could be a great alternative sport.

I think we should get over there as much as possible
its a tough market to crack but if we can crack it then the rewards are there.

if i were Gallop I would encorage NRL teams to play trial games over there off season and at least 1 test a year. As well as a willing team or 2 to go over after grandfinal to play an exibition games against U.S.A

I am so amazed right now...

How fantastic was it to see the Roos play USA.

Making Rugby League a success in the USA will be worth every cent and effort.

The advantage we have over union is that, from my experience in the USA, RU is seen as an excuse for a piss up and not a serious sport.

As someone else mentioned on another site, the US public seem to be of that opinion, with 8000 watching the Eagles play SA in a Test match in the States (not sure where but it was recent).

Plus the fact that union's totally shite, of course.........

The 'secret' ingredient needed in the US is money. Yesterday their only real sponser was the people who make their jerseys - and I think they got a million bucks worth of publicity for the price of a set of jerseys.
Next game the Tomahawks play they will need to sign up a sponser who will chuck in some serious money.
The American comp has been running on the smell of an oily rag for the last seven years - but they now have a product worth millions - and all the right connections to sell it.
If they can get a regular gig on fox sports world they will potentially reach 40 million viewers - which is more than the population of Aus.

I think if two NRL clubs had an end of season trip planned to the USA, it would be good to see them play a game when they got there and then they could hit the town.

It would be good, but it should be done for other nations too.

Why can't the NRL just ask a couple of the teams that don't make the finals (ie: so they stop playing in the end of August) to either go over in Jan/Feb for a trial game or go in Septemeber before it gets too cold?

Im sure they could be given some attractive compensation to do so and wouldn't put a huge amount of strain on the players as they would've already completed the NRL season....surely it would be a goer?

Fox coverage is what's needed.

League players make gridiron players look like a bunch of pussies. If the average NFL fan was to cop a look at a league game, it would take off overnight.

It's easier to understand, it's faster, and the players don't need helmets

When I get my Level 3 Certificate, I hope to travel to the States to officiate in some of their games. As far as I know, at the moment they are having difficulty in finding referees locally and call on internationals for assistence in their numbers while they set up a foundation for their referees association. Referee Doug Keen from my district has often officiated games in the States including matches against the Irish for the battle of St. Patricks Day.

Good to hear and good luck with those efforts.
