LCD LED for me.

I currently have plasma but a bigger tv waiting to be installed.

LCD LED cheaper to run, cooler and wont burn into ur tv if you leave it on a gaming menu

Anything less than 50 inch I'd buy a LED TV, anything above, plasma because I couldn't justify the extra cost.

Truth is, there is very little difference in quality between the two these days. I certainly wouldn't be buying a 42 inch though, you'll regret it within a month. I have a 59 inch now, I think a 42 inch would even feel too small for a bedroom these days...

I really don't like the look of LED LCD.

It just looks off when watching a movie.

For sport it's great, gaming I don't know.

agreed... this debate is almost irrelevant now. go down to jb hifi (or your preferred electronics dealer) and test out the TV's yourself, with your eyes and whatnot. picture quality is a pretty subjective thing, and just because something is mathematically/scientifically, or even priced as the most technically brilliant screen, it may not be the one you like the most.

having said that, i still feel that LCD's have faster response, so for gaming i prefer LCD. the general rule has been, and to certain extents still is that LCD's are faster, plasmas have richer contrast (blacker blacks in particular) and larger sizes at better price points. since you have specified gaming as the purpose of the TV, i'd probably lean towards LCD. plasmas do still suffer burn-in, although to nowhere near the extent that it used to be the case.

i think for any other purpose, LCD vs Plasma is almost a null argument, just buy the one you prefer... but when the word gaming is used i'd still have to lean towards the LCD.

Depends on the brand. LG have a rep for screen burn, Samsung and Panasonic have pretty much none these days. In saying that, I've had a 50 inch LG and would have image retention rarely but the image never "burnt in". I have a series 7 samsung 59 inch now and not once have I seen any form of image retention and I play games a bit and stupidly leave movies paused for extended periods.

I prefer the image on plasma's, it tends to look slightly more natural but many prefer the super clean crisp lines that can tend to make things a bit plastic on LED tvs. It's all personal preference I guess. In saying that, I watch more movies and sports than play video games in my older years, so much of my opinion probably isn't relevant to this discussion.

I always thought plasmas had the superior response times?

Certainly have always had far better refresh rates...

Personally I prefer plasma as I consider the picture to be as good or a tiny bit better, plus they are also in the vicinity of $500-1000 cheaper for the same size screen which makes the choice pretty obvious to me.

I prefer LCD for everything over Plasma. My buddy got a huge plasma from JB when they were on special last year and when we have LAN parties and I bring my gaming TV the difference is huge and I really don't like the plasma because I personally prefer the crisp picture of an LCD.

The only thing to do is what perverse said and go down and just seem them in person but for gaming definitely go with an LCD imo.

Plasmas produce a better picture dollar for dollar but they are heavy, have a massive glass panel on the front (so they reflect light) and use somewhat more power.

That said I have an LCD. I bought one of the first generation 200hz bravias so I spent crazy money to get a TV that is a little old hat now but its a nice tele. I turned off all that motion smoothing stuff because it makes sport (what I primarily watch on TV) look a bit weird.
