The system works well enough

If the NRL could uncover actual cap breaches then yes I might agree with you. I still think you could put something in addition to the salary cap, maybe something that balances out against the third party deals

The salary cap isn’t doing much better.
Problem is we have two tiers of clubs. Top players won't go to clubs like the tigers etc. for big money because they want premierships. We need to raise the standard of coaching and administration in the whole NRL if we want a more level playing field. My Tigers for example a total basket case run by the Wests Leagues Club, an establishment connected to one of the least successful NSWRL foundation clubs. We've got a CEO who was a proven failure at Penrith who has a protective halo around him at our club for some reason and we've got an obnoxious, discredited solicitor as Chairman. There are similar issues at the other battling clubs as well. Even if Munster was offered $2m a season by us, he'd still ponder taking unders from the Storm because of their success

I agree with you to a degree but if a player was offered $2million compared to $1million they would go to for the $2million. The biggest difference between clubs is talent, particularly in the spine positions.

Also administration is a much bigger thing than coaching. Outside of Bellamy and perhaps Bennett, who have done it over 20 -30 years and who have achieved success and developed talent over a long time, most coaches are purely dependent on the talent or roster they have. A case in point is Ivan Cleary, who did not do much more with Michael McGuire (probably arguably less) but look at him at Penrith with better administration and talent.

A draft won't fix everything. But if you don't think it would help even the talent pool significantly you are delusional.

It's much better than the current system of player agents and NRL scouts ambulance chasing 14 year-olds around and the blue chip prospects having their pick of teams to sign for, with the rich getting richer.
A draft is lazy recruiting, it also forces players towards a team they dont want to go to (possibly) which mean theyll play half arsed, you want every club invested in bringing up and developing their juniors to aspire to play for your own area... draft is just another cop out for clubs that are just pilfering or shit at their roster management, it only gets brought up by those who look over the fence wishing thet had a turbo or tedesco etc

A draft would help but I agree it is a lazy way of doing it. The biggest problem with a draft though is the whole tanking thing. The last month was a hard watch so you wouldn’t want that to be extended
