Good result for the knights, I am surprised also that PNG didnt win it on home soil. It may be a few more years until we see players progressing from the Hunters set up into NRL squads and giving them the talent they need to step up a tier.

PNG were down 18- 6 with 35 minutes played in the first half.

Ase Boas came on and set up a try for Justin Olam right on halftime and PNG went to the break 18-12 behind.

Straight after halftime Ase Boas himself scored to level up at 18 all and in the following set David Mead scored off a towering bomb from Ase Boas again to take the lead at 24-18.

Nene McDonald scored off a Klye Laybutt grubber kick with 20 minutes to go.

England scored the last try of the match with 8 minutes remaining and that is how it ended.

Watson Boas brought his kicking boots today kicking 6/6

A game of two halves today. Very entertaining display from both teams. I felt that the PNG was more organised in the second half and that was the difference. Nene Macdonald was phenomenal for Kumuls.

Tom Lineham was my pick from the Knights after the series.

The poor crowds are probably a reflection of the Super League's profile in this part of the world. The popularity of the competition will pick up in future as more PNG boys are recruited in Eng. (Well that seems more likely than the NRL esp after next world cup)

Fantastic match. A lot of niggle and agression. Fantastic viewing. Thought the quality was high, just a fraction slower than tier 1. Nene was huge. Olam great. Boas brothers superb. Tommy Butterfield played well as always, but the speed would be quicker with Segeyaro. Add Martin and they are getting closer.

For mine Ase Boas return to Five-Eight just before halftime turned the game for PNG.

His presence on the field actually brought out the best from the likes of Nene McDonald, Justin Olam and David Mead.

Only the coach can say why he was over looked for a rookie from the Digicel Cup during the first game last week.

You’d think Marum wanted to blood a few.

Yes it could be. Both Boas boys leaving for England is going to leave a massive hole in the Hunters Team for next season.

With Hooker Wartovo Puara jnr and Fullback Stargorth Amean also heading to England the Hunters are going to need a whole new spine.

If there is one player who has been a big part of Michael Marums success as a coach from the local Digicel Cup to the Hunters and the National Kumuls Team it has to be Ase Boas.

2012- Agmark Rabaul Gurias Digicel Cup Premership ( Ase Boas in only his 2nd year leading the team at Halfback)

2013- Agmark Gurias beat 2012 QCUP Champions Northern Pride in Cairns during the Gurias pre-season tour of North Queensland.

2016- PNG Kumuls win against Fiji in the Pacific Test. Ase Boas at Five-eight after being overlooked in 2015 by previous coach Mal Meninga.

2017- PNG Kumuls win over Cook Islands in the Pacific Cup. Still with Ase Boas at Five-eight.

2017- PNG Hunters Minor Premiership and Grand Final Glory over SS Coast Falcons with Ase Boas man of the match and setting up the game winning try and kicking the winning convertion.

2017- World Cup Games. Played all the matches except for the one vs the USA where he as rested for an injury.

2018- PNG Kumuls win against Fiji in this years Pacific Cup. Ase was on the bench but made a good contribution keeping things calm when Fiji began their fight back.

Will be interesting to how Marum will replace him next year and beyond.

Isnt Segeyaro busy on holiday overseas in Asia somewhere. Saw a clip of him, Cory Norman and Isaac John trekking up and down the coast.

Yes I remember watching clips of Ase playing for the Gurias. Marum has done well in his development. Time for some young guns to come through.

Developing halves is key for the kumuls as they seem lost at times and need an on field general and organizer.

I think this will always be how the Hunters work, essentially getting the best of the digicel cup together to train/play in a more professional environment. As the best get signed by English, Australian clubs replace them with the best local talent again and wash rinse repeat.

A Hunters under 18 or 20's team would probably be an even better way of getting talent signed to pro clubs.

Marum did do very well developing Ase Boas, Israel Eliab, Puara jnr and young Watson through the Gurias acedemy those years ago.

And though the Gurias acedemy and school boys league in East New Britain Province still exists today Marum hasn't been going back to it for new Hunters players.
