Sure, if they only need $2mill then that’s great, shows theres a level of viability to them. If they need $20mill a year not so much.
So the concept of supporting foreign teams is ok it’s just the amount that’s an issue

lmao so full of bs

Not really, it’s a monumental waste of tax payers money that has little community benefit. But if they have to I’d rather it be $2mill than $20mill a year of our money!

not to mention you seem to be totally missing the point of viability. If you need $2mill ayear, ok not great but not terrible for running a team in a poor country. If you need $20 or $25mill a year, wtf? you really don’t belong in a professional sports league.

So albo has thrown hundreds of million towards an afl stadium for the Tasmanian afl team, six million for the fiji super rugby team

that just leaves the 250 million for png

which sadly is less than afl but it is what it is

Ill give you a little hint.

Tasmania is part of Australia, and people who live there vote in elections.

And even then, its a hugely unpopular decision, like to the point of it possibly not even being ever built.

A PNG NRL is D_E_A_D

Lol your equating govt pork barreling spending on an Australian sports team in an Australian city to throwing silly amounts of tax payers hard earned money on a folly in a third world country?

If png just need $2mill a year ok, at least it shows they have a chance of viability when the funds dry up, if they need need $20mill a year then clearly they are totally unviable Long term.

You gotta stop coming with reasons for the money to be spent better... that money is gone.. forget about how much the tax payer pays and to what cause, because the moment you do, you end up a massive hypocrite, when we all talk about the investment by WA govt into getting a NRL franchise,
Albo's the PM, if he wants to blow money on that stupid vote, that only ended up a waste of time, and cost effort and money for zilch, especially when SA went ahead and did the deed regardless of the votes..
The whole Tasmanian stadium funding, the Penrith upgrade, QLD stadiums upgrade for the Olympics, and the amount we waste yearly going to the P.I.s in general for either sports funding or just foreign aid..
spending a fraction to build the one thing PNG has always wanted is a team to play 1st grade, its basically a no brainer for the govt, cheapest option for the ARLC and the clubs, but harder to sell it to the public, which after that tassie stadium debacle..should be a shoe in

I’m not expecting a wa govt to spend $20mil a year on an nrl club, forever. And if it did need that I’d be feeling the same way, it’s totally unviable and doomed to eventual failure and the govt should be spending the money on better things.

Clarke's column on Insta also reported this, he is very rarely wrong with his mail.

169 comments and not 1 positive.

They don't have the talent and have Buckley's of ever signing a star , if the Warriors havnt been able to sign a star what chance does PNG have ? They'll be permanent caller dwellers.

Gutted for Perth, that would have been true expansion.

This also puts NZ2 down the que, both would have been preferred to PNG

PNG can only be propped up by Aussie Govnt money and the way albo is tracking, this may be a 1 term government. Then what? No way the libs back this.

Perth will be announced next year as team 19

people negative about png are ignorant of what the bid entails

the only negative is pvl probably hasn’t got the 20 million federal grant in a contract and is relying upon govts being honest

look what the fiji drua side has done for the fiji union side

like I’ve said nrl are all for a fast Buck under Vlandys so if the fed dollars stack up I’m not surprised they’ll be team 18. If it will work and if it has any long term viability about it are a very different thing. At least it’s not another queensland or nsw club.

They won’t. They could possibly look to introduce a 19th club mid next tv contract, say 2030ish if they can build an extra 12 games value into the next tv deal and if they are confident they can find a viable club 20 down the track.
