Fiji Rugby is completely different…to PNG RL

They beat the Wallabies 50 years ago and have dominated the 7 a side game for years … its hardly surprising they have now made the quarter finals at the world cup
And the best thing for Fijian Rugby has been them playing in Europe, with half there team coming from there.

1 and half seasons of them being flogged every week in Super Rugby isn't what has created that.

A) As if the NRL give two shits about international Rugby League

B) As if the existing NRL clubs will swallow taking a smaller share of the pie, to accommodate another team, until a new TV teal gets signed
At the moment the nrl is realising $50-60mill surplus each year. Some of that is committed to asset building and some should one day go back to the missing grassroots funding, but still leaves enough to cover new clubs without it impacting existing grant agreement, if that’s what the nrl wants to spend it’s money on.

Clarke's column on Insta also reported this, he is very rarely wrong with his mail.

169 comments and not 1 positive.

They don't have the talent and have Buckley's of ever signing a star , if the Warriors havnt been able to sign a star what chance does PNG have ? They'll be permanent caller dwellers.

Gutted for Perth, that would have been true expansion.

This also puts NZ2 down the que, both would have been preferred to PNG
This is it, they're going to struggle to get any Aussie to play for them, unless they are given some huge allowances. They will rely solely on locals which will take at least a decade for them to get up to a remotely decent level.

Once again the NRL is acting in the best interest of external organisations. I'm still not buying that this will be announced though.

Lets wait until its announced by an official channel or actual partner of the game before you start pissing your pants in excitement.

No one knows png population as govt doesn’t want anyone to know it. If the real number comes out it ranks them even lower on every measurement of a countries health and wealth so they refuse to do legit census. Not dodgy at all lol

yeh fiji is just under 1mill people.

This is not good. I'm all for expansion, but should we not focus on expanding here in Australia first? Not even with a new team, but with our grass roots. Like, for f**k sakes, stop involving the game in political matters. As soon as that funding for PNG is pulled, the team will fold. Invest in a team that will have genuine financial backing, not Australian Government funds who'll allocate the funds for this team elsewhere in due course due to more pressing matters that must be prioritised.

This won't create tourism. Everyone knows how bad PNG is crime wise.
No NRL player will ever leave the comfort of their backyard that is either AUS or NZ to live in Port Moresby.
Their country may have 11 million people, but Port Moresby only has 410,000 people, compared to both Perth & Adelaide who have over 1 million+.
Even if the bid is joint with Cairns, They do not have stadiums that I believe are NRL standards heading into the next decade. It's has if PVL and co are actually content with being the inferior sporting code in Aus? Like cmon, as much as I hate to admit it, the AFL is currently shitting on us with crowds, expansion etc. because they've actually invested NATIONALLY. We do not need a PNG team due to the government influence. If we are shown all the bids for the 18th team, and PNG is actually the most viable, WITHOUT including Government funding, then i'll take it back. But until then, I just do not see how this doesn't set the game back another 20 years.

EDIT - just called RL central (funnily enough white pages online has the number listed) and they said it's all speculation and supposedly nothing is confirmed yet as not all bids have been officially presented yet. But still... invest more in the national tier levels before ever thinking of expanding over there.

Surely ol mate wouldn’t be that far wrong ?

Fiji's is 1m. PNG and international groups estimate theirs to be about 10m, but some university researcher looked at satellites images and estimated 17m. It's interesting he managed to find some obscure population count for PNG, but couldn't find anything for Fiji.

But in this context the population is not really relevant.

Its not like those 10M are eyeballs for TV, or have disposable income to spend money on the game, or are even future NRL players.

You have summarised the issues well…

I don’t get it either …

PVL must have something else up his sleeve …. Surely ?

All this for $20m a year Govt Funding makes zero sense …

Oh I agree, just pointing out how wrong his irrelevant numbers were in the first place.

If this is true, then that is a terrible expansion choice from the NRL. The big question the journos should ask is what happens when the government stops funding PNG?

And on the playing side, if they are based in Cairns, the team has to fly for home games. If the team is based in PNG, then how are they going to attract players to live in a third world country?

Keep it simple and expand to Perth.

As early as 2025??? Where are they going to play? There is no NRL level stadium in PNG or Cairns? What team do they amass in that timeframe??

Surely a journo with the longevity of breaking big NRL stories like Michelle Bishop wouldn’t be going public with this without a concrete source ?
