Same scenario. Same criticism of PNG can be directed at Perth.
Yeh, except the wa govt has said they’ll back it and 3 named millionaires have said they want in, who so far has put their hand up to fund png? Then you’ve got a wealthy rl fanbase in perth v a poverty stricken fanbase in png. But yeh it’s the same lol.

Yeah and Andrew Forrest would be getting some of that money back through ticket sales, membership and corporates.

That’s the difference between investing in a team based in a developed country as opposed to one in a third world country.
Andrew Forrest earns a personal salary of $600-800mill a year, he could buy an entire sport if he wanted lol. He only got involved in union as he played it at uni and in true WA parochial style was pssed at WA being excluded. If png can put a mining company willing to put in millions a year for a guaranteed ten years on the table then fair play, their bid would start to have some legitimacy. Havent seen anything from them in this bid or previous ones to suggest that’s in the wings.

Can you go a post without contradicting yourself. You're against PNG because (federal) government is backing it..

Let's see who gets best backing. Let these unnamed millionaires reveal themselves. Didn't help titans

They would more than likely need more than ten years. They would need to fund this until such time as they become a stable society and economy and you don’t know how long that would take.

I have sat back and read all the posts about PNG being poor and everyone here lives below the poverty line and all that and I think I have had enough of that bullshit being stated as a fact in almost every post against this bid.

Firstly I have state categorically that I don't support the current bid for 2025. For 2030 and beyond I would support it.

Anyway back to painting all of us as being poor. That statement is just plain false.

I am 40 years old and I live in Port Moresby. I'm an accountant by profession. I went to University, I graduated got a good job. I bought my own house, My own car and I have TV in my house and watch all 8 weekly NRL games on Fox.

And there are hundreds of thousands more just like me. Accountants, Lawyers, Doctors, Pilots, Bankers, Insurance Brokers, Engineers, Geologists etc and you name it....

This is where I bought my house. http://www.edaitown.com/
Go to the site and check the prices. And there are new houses estate just like that being built here everyday. The demand from our new middle class is very high.

Its the same with cars etc... Toyota has been out of stock for the last 2 years. Now we have to prepay and wait for the car to arrive after 3 months. And for those who can't wait or don't want to buy a new car this is now the most popular site where everyone goes to buy a used car straight out of Japan. https://www.japanesevehicles.com/

But the one thing we all have in common is the love for Rugby League. I'm a paid up Hunters member and attended every game pre-covid. Those who came to watch too are alot of those whom I mentioned above.

And those in the rural areas that don't get a regular income are not really poor. Their income although is irregular is still very very good. They still get to sell their Coffee beans, Cocoa, Vanilla, Oil palm etc. None of them are dying from hunger. And when their crops are not ready for sale they still also have food gardens and the sea and rivers and forests to hunt and fish.

So please don't use the same poor brush on all us.
Its insulting.

Nope. I’m against png because 1. it looks incredibly financially unstable 2. No Australian or nz player is going to want to play for them and any decent png player is going to want to move to australia at first opportunity.

again if the fed govt comes out and says “we will guarantee $10mill a year for the next 50 years” then sure let’s talk about the opportunity, but until then it’s just a pipedream, as it was back in 2011 when they wanted in.

don’t think anyone is saying everyone is poor, but clearly the majority live on a salary that is way way below the avg Australian salary. Is there enough ”middle class“ people in port moresby to sell 20k memberships at $500-1500k?
No one denies the passion for rugby league in the country, but that doesn’t pay $15mill in bills.

Hi Mikail Eagle. I apologise if this debate has offended you. Maybe I was slightly imprudent with how I described your country; although there was never any intended malice.

The economic data shows though that your average earnings is a lot less than the average earnings in both Australia and New Zealand. That, unfortunately, presents issues if you are wanting to enter into an Australian competition as that is your terms of trade and who you have to financially compete with.

20K membership in Port Moresby is nothing. This city has already over 400k population.
And a good proportion of that is the new middle class.

When I drive to work every morning I don't see any poverty here. Only traffic jams at every intersection because the number of vehicles on our roads have multiplied 5 x over the last 10 years. New lanes are being added to major freeways every 2 years.

When I go to the Supermarkets the carparks are all full and the check counters have long queues with shoppers with full shopping trolleys.

When I go out to the night clubs or bars on weekends I don't see poverty. I only see fellow locals drinking like fish where a glass or a bottle of beer starts at $8 and upwards.

All good Colk. Apology accepted.
As I said earlier I don't really support the bid at this stage. I think a Hunters Team in the U18's and U20's should take precedence. And whatever money is being used to put this bid together should be used for this.

Ok cool.

Is this predominantly a Port Moresby thing? Or are there other areas that are developed?

How dangerous is PNG? I have heard other people who have lived there comment on security and law and order

On the logistics, how would you attract players or keep players and would it be possible to base your team there - I don’t think a FIFO would work for an example

Thanks mate. I didn’t mean any malice by it.

Totally agree having a PNG Under 18’s and Under 20’s and probably an academy. First things first is seeing more players from PNG playing in the NRL

I’ve seen first world countries first hand and I was thinking if that were the case (looking at the research it seemed that way) how difficult it would be to establish a side but if enough people can attend games and buy memberships etc than that is the biggest hurdle overcome

Port Moresby and Lae and to a lesser extent Kokopo and Mt Hagen.

The Law & Order situation his is not different to any other country.
Even though I've lived in Port Moresby for the last 20 years, there are still parts of the City that I have never gone to. I'm pretty sure every country or city has parts that you just would not venture into.
If you use common sense and stay vigilant you won't have any problems.

If there was a PNG NRL Team fans here would want it to be 99% made up of local players. Maybe no more than 5 overseas imports. And I think a Hunters Village could be built on the outskirts of the City for the whole team. Lots of vacant Land where I currently reside.

You’re right on the second point. Even in Australia which is a very safe country by international standards there are some areas which are a bit hairy. The only countries which I thought were incredibly safe were Japan and Switzerland.

I think the last point is key. I think any prospective PNG side would find it too difficult to attract players. I’m a Canberra fan and we find it hard to attract players. The same could be said for the Warriors and the Cowboys, so the emphasis would definitely be on producing players.

Thanks for the insights of a local @mikail-eagle and apologies for any offence caused.

Completely agree regarding the Hunters fielding junior teams, the transition from Digicel to QLD Cup to NRL at an adult age is always going to be a massive ask for players and no surprise only one has managed it so far. Getting scouted at 17-20 would give players a better chance at making it to the top.

Whilst I don’t think PNG is the best option for team 18 I would genuinely love to see a PNG side or 2 in the NRL one day with Digicel Cup on a par with QLD & NSW Cup (and a NZ semi-pro comp as well). Hopefully PNG can keep making strides and that dream can become a reality one day.
