PNG and the USA signed a controversial security pact a few Months ago in Port Moresby.
There were a lot of protests against it.

PM Marape and PNG Government would not have been moved and signed if there was no sweetener somewhere.

Sounds like a much cheaper version of "soft diplomacy" then the convoluted one proposed in this thread.

Just sign a pact.

Of course we know it's not worth the paper it's written on when it comes to geo politics, but neither is creating an NRL team either.

It’s not another brisbane club so all good by me.

You think Brisbane was put on this planet to create juniors for unwanted teams in Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth. Then you get pissy when people from Brisbane refuse to be a doormat.

I’ve been critical of the game lacking courage when it comes to growing. of the 4 possible expansion options this is by far the riskiest so good on them for at least having some balls. If it’ll end in tears time will tell, hopefully they can find a way to make it work for the long term.

Actually it's the least riskiest because the money is guaranteed up front. No club will be cannibalised by a PNG team. It'll bring more players into the NRL.

The riskiest options are Perth and Adelaide. Both clubs will rely on juniors from Queensland, NSW, NZ and PNG.

PNG has put in the hard yards by entering a team in the QRL 8 years ago. They've earnt their place in the NRL.

Perth RL will need to drop the entitlement complex and work their way up through the lower grades.

Next two teams should be NZ2 and Brisbane 3.

You would have to be completely stoned to think that, within the next 5 to 10 years, any new NRL side wouldn't be made up almost exclusively of existing squad players from Australia NZ and the PI nations.

PNG just isn't producing that sort of quality that quickly.

They'll never announce the actual details of the deal publicly.

Sure there'll be a publicity package, but you'd have to make a bunch of FOI requests and jump through a ton of hoops to suss out all the details of actual agreements themselves, and a good portion of it will probably be protected by national security as well given the circumstances.

I just hope that the NRL is smart enough to use this situation to push for heavy Federal investment into the sport locally as well, as that's the only way they could benefit from this long term. Investment into grassroots programs nationally and stadium upgrades and replacements for half the sides in the NRL should have been in their first proposal.
Agreed

Lol.
What happened to Bris3 being the only legitimate option for team 18? All those hours of googling your proof, flushed away in a nano second. I hope you check in on the head of WWOS.

You mean the thing I posted a week or so back?

Let you in on a little secret, $13M for two teams ($6M each) is a tad less then $25M for 10 years or $600M.

Also very much of note is the commitment was only for 4 years.

I also understand they are fully based in Fiji, with Fijian players, and have been completely dogshit performance wise

Also it should have no effect on other expansion teams. PNG wont be funded by the next TV deal. So whatever the broadcasters are after can still bring a 19th team in next cycle.

Edit: Ideally two extra teams post PNG. Perth for the Australian side of media rights and NZ2 to push it up in NZ.

Pretty sure he’s stoned most of the time.

Yeh png isn’t a risk whilst the govt money there, then what? Are they no longer going to be third world country in ten years?
the risk is in png long term viability and short term whose going to sign for them?

If the 60mil a year from Canberra is legit, its a no brainer. We basically get massive funding for a decade to setup pacific pathways.

We? The NRL would see very little of that money if that story is correct.

Given how much corruption there is in PNG, most of it would go into the pockets of PNG govt officials and their mates.

There is another Elephant in the room.

The Kumuls are f**king dogshit, like to call them a Tier 2 nation is generous, like Tier 3 at best.

There is a lot of work to be done there.

There are more Perth juniors currently playing in the NRL than there are PNG juniors, WTF are you on about?

That should be the next 3 teams, Not sure of the order but if you get PNG next. With the pathways fixed up, I'd even put them with the fiji Flegg team ( Assuming it happens)

That gets more juniors before you go to Perth which is the big thing they lack.

Not sure PNG model fits as has been reported, So likely tweeks to that

600 million wow

blows everyone out of the water doesn’t it
A few lines later govt says no final amount has been decided, love to know where the $600mill has come from lol

from a money point of view, even if only half that, yes. From a realsitic long term viability of a successful nrl club, not really.

I hope nrl has a plan b for them and doesn’t screw the png fans when the govt changes its mind.

nrl “ any new nrl club has to have a strong business case”
nrl this week “f**k a business case, give us that tax payer money”

You need to work on your reading comprehension.

I said the only bid that ticks every box is the Brisbane Tigers. The only reason PNG is getting the 18th licence is because the Aus Gov and PNG Gov are funding it. If it came down to the bid with the most juniors and value to the broadcasters then Brisbane Tigers would win in a landslide.
