If the NRl had any sense it would have been campaigng for Govt funds to improve the Digicel cup, have a massive schools RL program and a second club in the QRL. Trying to get Australian and Kiwis and the odd PNG player to live in cairns and fly to PNG is just about the worse expansion model Ive ever heard of! Makes the Bears look like a good idea.
Almost like making a Perth team from scratch then hoping the locals will come around to it, you know your favourite "Top down approach"or "build it and they will come" wheres that pic of the Kids on the soapbox??? I wonder if thats Png getting a helping hand..
I wonder if the government’s care about those digicel cup comps or the grassroots of PNG...nope... they certainly don't care about Perths or Adelaides ..... looks like they all want a 1st grade side

That is the issue Perth throws up. It will take 10-15 years to get that up to scratch.

Yet most people think Perth should be one of the 3 to come in

Im one of those... but the more PR keeps posting the less i feel i want to see it happening.... just joking.... i don't think perth can come in now, not without a team like png or nz2 first producing more athletes to add to the growing player pool, as we don't have enough to throw around the game, with including a new perth, adelaide or vic2 etc basically areas that aren't playing at a high quality level (atleast reserve grade) in time yes, and they'll (perf) easily produce just as many players as they take, but that won't be straight away and could drain the quality of both that team and the comp overall...
people think png will also be also rans... well that might be true, but atleast they're aren't draining the well, and are not costing the NRL any more than another start up city would

Why do you think PNG will provide players quicker than Perth?

You are starting a brand new club from scratch in a non Rugby League market. That is hard, poses different problems but that is what RL needs to really grow as a sport.

Same could be said for Perth, They will attract players but anyone Really really good they will to develop.

However you then need to find the coaches to do that. So all potential options are long term projects

Shear player numbers. Do many schools have RL teams/programs over there?
I don't know but I'm sure that would be looked at if a team came in.
I'm sure the 4k playing numbers would have a greater success at going on to be an NRL player than the numbers of players in Port Moresby who have poor health and nutrition.

Correct, last count WA had roughly 5k in participation, the whole country of PNG plays the sport could be 10 million, thats the goal to get a percentage of that upto elite level or atleast 1st grade level... then usher in Perth, Adelaide etc, they can do this too, but not until this png domino goes first

Ive said since 12 years ago Id rather see the ARLC invest in grassroots and the warl/nrlwa comp, nsw cup side and sg ball and jersey flegg well before a Perth NRl club is admitted.
Alas the ARLC has no such strategy so the only way we will see the game develop here is top down. Shouldnt be that way but thats rugba league for you

Id be happy for that 10-15 year journey to start now! Should have started 10-15 years ago!

Not everyone is dirt poor, you really aren't looking at the scope of the whole country, yes there isn't definitive population numbers, but thats really irrelevant, kids that know how to play the game at a junior age, have a better chance to prosper to 1st grade level, png kids play RL, WA/SA kids dont..

if you think a cairns based PNG team isnt going to be at least 75% full of australians and kiwis youre kidding yourself.
Dolphins have and continue to poach players from existing pools, it will be many years before we see them full of Moreton Bay region players. Thast the reality of any new club.

It will take at least a decade though for those systems to be in place and producing players. I agree they have a head start on perth in pure numbers alone but arguably the Jnr systems are actually more developed in perth (well was till SG Ball was closed down) than in PNG. Its a huge step to take kids running around fields in barefoot to NRL level and will take many years and lots of grassroots investment.

Yes they do play NRL here. What's the number of kids playing league in Port Moresby? Organised comps, not just booting the ball around a park?

Like most of PNG theres no data so who knows? Always take Wiki with a pinch of salt but it claims there are 5000 registered JNrs in PNG.

Forget PNGs population. That's as relevant as Australia's population in regards to a new team. 400k in PM which is cut off from the rest of the country.
