The club don’t need 290 million to get established. They should try and set aside 100 million to invest in income producing assets
Depends if the $29mill a year is on top of the NRL grant, or inclusive of the NRL grant. Devils always in the detail.

Foreign aid being taken away from people who need it and going to already wealthy Australians is not something to celebrate.
Foreign aid has not been taken away, it's not being diverted either... you seem to think that 600 million is all we are giving them, full stop, look it up bro we give them a lot more in "loans" than you think, these loans are never getting paid back either...
You're delusional if you think this is nothing but a bribe to keep them on our side of politics...
NRL should take the money and run with it, this opportunity will never come again, those who think this is bad for RL, aren't thinking of the long term outcomes, just the baggage a 3rd world country provides... you'd think gifting a poor country a 1st grade team to support would be celebrated, a step up to showcase their talents, regardless of how rough they have it, instead the classism of the forums shows we are way too elitist to care about why we enjoy our sport.. might aswell watch be Rugby Union instead

Yes if the nrl doesn’t have to pay a grant I can see why pvl is even more in favour of it

other than travel costs the team would be fully paid by the feds

I think this would be in addition to existing monies for png rather than a relocation

Lol, you talk about classism and then roll out this patronising dross.

Abdo is gifting corrupt PNG officials a team to watch and get richer from. Plus the airlines and hotels and casinos where they'll stay whilst 'supporting the team'.

Meanwhile, The poor people in PNG get patronised: 'we're giving you your own team to support so one day little Jimmy can dream about playing in the NRL.'

As for foreign aid, the PNG government has been given billions in the past - why didn't they put any towards an NRL team then? Because it's easier to put your hand out for more than be accountable.

The idea about a PNG team isn't a bad one. The reasons why its being brought in and the methods used are.

Patronising?

Like you said the idea is sound, who cares as to why is definitely the issue, the classism I'm talking about is here on the opinion forum, you don't think the local government in Parramatta chipping in millions in tax payers money into the Eels sponsorship is just as bad, it happened this season and they played in the spoonball...

Nice diagram, not sure of its relevance, I don't know anything about afl except what you guys post here. Not sure about the relevance of Parramatta sponsorship either local councils have used funds to support their local teams for years.

I suspect, given the lack of value to the NRL of a PNG team, that Vlandys will want it a at worse a cost neutral exercise in terms of the teams running costs. So I cant see them getting $29mill a year govt funding AND NRL forking out $17mill a year to them.

Either way it’s a win for rugby league

wither the club get it and build up assets or the nrl gets it and also uses that money to invest in more assets

saving around 20 million for ten years means the arlc gets an extra 200 million in saved costs (less travel)

It's money in the foreign aid budget. If it wasn't going to rich NRL players, it'd be going to actual foreign aid. Therefore yes it is being taken away.

Was listening to Andrew Voss on SEN podcast earlier ( might have been yesterdays show)…,

He said that the players who will take PNG to their first NRL finals campaign have not yet been born … that’s how far they are away from being competitive…

Bit harsh or is Voss speaking facts?

Therefore..... get a grip, it wouldn't be there if the team wasn't floated in the first place, they already get a certain amount allocated, this is addition to it
