if they have so many juniors, why aren't they coming through in the NRL?
Look how many kiwi juniors there are in the nrl after they got an nrl side

nrl clubs are lazy

heck most clubs don’t even develop their own area properly (Penrith exempted)

This doesn't ring true, there was plenty of Kiwi and PI players in the NSWRL/ARL and BRL before 1995.

I don't think the Warriors suddenly created a whole junior system that didn't exist beforehand to such an extent that it doubled or tripled participation.

NZ and Aus (and to a lesser extent PI nations) are culturally closer and have access to better coaching and first world living conditions.

The NRL clubs are lazy bit doesn't ring true also, it's been demonstrated repeatedly that clubs are willing to spend $750k on transfers fees for Super League players.

Why would they not spend a fraction of that on recruiting another Justin Olam?

The Hunters have played QCup level for a Decade now and bar Olam hardly anyone has graduated to NRL level.

Why would anyone think an NRL club suddenly solves this?

There has been a significant rise in the amount of Kiwi and Pacific Island players in the last 20 years.

Whether that is due to the Warriors or something else is another matter entirely. In any case, if you do think it as a causation rather than a correlation that just means that you would heavily back another Kiwi side

If anything the opposite for mine, it shows that the development is happening without any more significant investment needed.

As an aside I'm not against a NZ2, I'm just not convinced there is anywhere besides Auckland that it will work, and therefore will hurt them.

Of course it’s due to the warriors

so is the improved performance of nz against Australia

after the warriors made the gf in 2002 then every nrl club started sending scouts to nz

there was a story on here recently there was an elite schoolboys game in png

guess how many Aussie scouts showed up ?

Zilch

unlike afl rugby league could have an almost limitless supply of players from png nz and the rest of the pacific

Papua New Guinea launch bid to become the latest addition to the NRL

Papua New Guinea has launched its bid to have a team in the NRL, which could be expanded to 18 teams within the next 10 years.

The Dolphins will become the NRL’s latest addition when they join the competition in 2023. And already talk is turning to further expansion with PNG firmly in the mix.

They would face strong competition. Perth are pushing to have a side in the NRL, while Brisbane and New Zealand also want another representative.

“Our PNG NRL bid team is ready. The time to start the journey is now. We can’t wait any longer,” Raminai said.

Papua New Guinea already have a base in Australia. The PNG Hunters play in the Queensland Cup and Marape has spoken of his intention to have them play in the NRL.

“We are preparing for possibility of PNG owning a team in the NRL in 2025,” he said last year. “That is why the Hunters are becoming an entity of their own and turning into a professional outfit. With the Hunters relocating to Australia using their new visa, it will be also easy for them to stay in Australia and play if they secure an NRL contract.”

Papua New Guinea ready to go

PNG officials accept it will be a competitive process. But they have faith in their bid and are ready to give it a good shot.

“The investment and work we’ve done over the last 12 years with our infrastructure, governance and financial capacity and competitiveness of the sport in the country has put us in a good position,” PNG Rugby League chairman Sandis Tsaka said.

“Our men’s and women’s international teams are becoming competitive. Investment we’ve done across the game in terms of infrastructure has us in good stead to put in a good bid.

NRL immortal Andrew Johns has spoken out in support in the past. While Justin Olam and Xavier Coates are among high-profile NRL players to come from Papua New Guinea. The national side, The Kumuls, are also ranked fifth in the world

We know there are other teams within Australia and New Zealand have put their hand up. It will be a competitive process.”
