both? Its good they are doing it, but they are doing it because they are being paid for it ($300k a year if rumours are true), not out of some great altruistic strategy to deepen the player pool.
Not to deepen the "player pool" of the whole league even tho its ended up that way... but to deepen their own

youre missing the point, its happening because they are being paid to do it. As soon as the money stops the programs will as well.
We were talking about lazy NRL clubs not connecting with development opportunities outside their catchments, you brought up panthers, I pointed out that only exists as its a revenue stream for panthers.

The old turd finds a negative every time. Funnily enough he only ever praises the afl. Gills love child never changes.

The Cowboys have had links with PNG since 1995, and still have links with PNG

The reality is, for whatever reason, that not many PNG players make it.

The Hunters have been around for a decade and had 1.5 players become NRL standard.
Bit like French players, I think their are challenges in kids moving countries and also the development systems in PNG up to 16 year olds just hasnt been good enough. Its hard to take a 16-18 year old who hasnt had good coaching, dietary advice, training etc and then mould them. Hopefully these academies are a good step in the right direction. My concern is if they are led by the bid what happens if the bid fails to get license 18 and disappears?

Hunters are a bit more of a mystery why they havent produced more? If they are taking the best 25 players from a country with tens of thousands of players youd think theyd be good prospects for NRL pathway?

No you're missing the point, clubs set up these type of academies in areas where they can get value for money signings and track local leagues for the best recruits, a great example was matt burton, if panthers aren't invested in sourcing talent in that area, he stays in dubbo, taking one game to bathurst that holds only 13k, goes as a loss, the local council of course offset that with 300k, fair enough they get paid for the next decade, but its not altruistic, its about pilfering untapped talent, that other clubs are too lazy to source for.... these same clubs will wait now till panthers identify them, train them up, then debut them to only get poached, ala Matt Burton, Isiah Katoa, Spencer Leniu etc..
Of course penrith cant keep them all anyways, so its good to have that problem... More NRL clubs need to invest in academies outside their area, if you want Perth to be a real chance, as a real bid, they'll need to do the same at some point, PNG have already started their acedemy and are a decade ahead with their digicel cup and qcup hunters, of course you'll have a whole state to pull from, and you wont be able to rely only on the current player pool offcuts and locals RL players from perth only, it will need to boost your own player pool with players from around the state too

dont know why the cowboys haven’t done this before

Aussie clubs are so lazy
Please stop talking about things you know nothing about.

The Cowboys set up a pathway with the PNGRFL in 1994. They brought some of PNG's best players over to Townsville to play in the TRL. The players weren't up to standard and there was hostility back in Port Moresby when the news got back to them. Cowboys officials had to cancel a promotional tour in Port Moresby because there was an angry mob waiting for them at the airport when it was reported that their best player was struggling in the TRL. In 1995 he played a few games for the Cowboys in reserve grade, got home sick, then went back to PNG.

So the gist of the story is they tried in 1995, then gave up, never to try again till now?

It's been tried since.

Like I said before, why aren't the Hunters producing NRL talent? It's not like they have struggled in the last decade, winning the QCup in 2017.

you also have to take into account the visa situation until recently only changed during covid so the hunters could be based in qld.
they havent had access to the same visa that the fijians etc have been able to take advantage of

Of course he’s missing the point. It’s deliberate and just part of his manic anti Sydney agenda. $300000 is a drop in the ocean of a council budget and the benefits far outweigh the cost from its point of view. The panthers success of recent years is no fluke. Good on them. Every nsw club should be doing something similar to get access to great athletes and grow the game in the regions.

ok lets put it this way, if the Bathurst regional council werent paying pAnthers $300k a year do you think Panthers would be spending money on an academy in the region? I think we all know the answer to that. So no they arent doing it to increase the player pool, they are doing it because they are being paid to do so. Finding talent is a nice spin off for them.

A better example of one of the rare places it is happening would be the Roosters in Gosford. As far as I know they arent being paid to develop there and are doing it purely to generate more talent for themselves/NRL.

I stand to be corrected but wasn’t the Bathurst academy before they took games there

Gus was talking about it ages ago

Doesn't matter if they pay or panthers dont play there, but the reason they are there is to garner the local kids into their pathways
Even panthers don't take games to bathurst in the future, the pathways are set from dubbo, parkes, bathurst to penrith... this is what im talking about
