Garbage, whoever ends up 18th, 19th and 20th will need to front up cash for the licence to these other clubs, png have the govt to fall back on, these other bids will need to start saving up mula if they want in
They didnt ask dolphins for a license fee, why would 18-20 be any different?

This \/
Hasn't killed the bid, the clubs were asking for a licence fee when the dolphins were bidding, but by the time they all united to push that case the arlc had already announced that Brisbane bid as the winner, now regardless of who gets the 18th the clubs want that fee from Perth or Png or whoever is wanting to bid.. its not a case of the govt paying it

There is no way any investors are giving $34mill plus to other clubs just to get in, or the nrl wanting to see that money that could be used for a strong start period up just flitter away to the other clubs. The nrl will sweeten the vote with a big grant increase in the hope it’ll be recouped by revenue increases, just like last time.

So in mere weeks, "PNG" went from the media saying "guaranteed next team" and talking about coaches, recruiting etc to it now being 2nd at best.

I suspect it's slipping away, and the media(and some on here) where completely ignorant of the reality of how stupid an idea it was.

New A league clubs pay a licence fee. So it's not unheard of.

It’s unheard of in RL. Clubs had a cash grab at the PNG govt money, they wont get anything from any other prospect. Nrl will want a bank guarantee like they asked of the dolphins.
I don't think it's an outrageous prospect though. The existing clubs have built up the value in the league over a period of time, so if you want in you need to pay a fee.

Perth has loads of money to throw at the bid but not anything for other rugby league clibs

nrl clubs make profits

hence they are valuable businesses

they will be worth 100 million pretty soon

So nothing wrong with the nrl getting some back

its what major league soccer does

A license fee would be great for the nrl if they can get it and is what they want, but let's not pretend an 18th club doesn't contribute without it. It has never happened before in the nrl.

With what the WA gov are looking to provide to secure a team, then it is fair to say that rugby league will be getting paid.

For example, an upgrade to perth oval and a high performance centre to be used by the team and to support junior development in the state is 100's of millions in direct benefit to rugby league already. That to me is more valuable than say a 20M fee that the clubs will gobble up and waste.

Then throw in the potential for higher value sponsorships for the nrl and other clubs with wider national exposure (has been cited as a reason afl can charge more for sponsors), then the increase in tv rights for a 9th game which is how a new team has traditionally 'paid' its way in.

Yeah that's a fair point

Not to mention the ridiculous situation of asking a team to pay a licence fee, and then turnaround and issue them a grant.

It's stupidnomics.
