They are here to stay.

"A landmark $600 million deal for a Papua New Guinea team to enter the National Rugby League comes with an escape clause allowing the Australian government to immediately terminate the agreement if PNG strikes a security or policing pact with China or other rival nations over the next decade."

Think this reeks of politics. Tennis Albo wants a legacy since The Voice died in the arse.

Can't see many top players wanting to live in Port Moresby.
Some may see it as a 2-3 year money grab and go for it.
But let’s face it, moresby is a dangerous, hot place and they’ll need the tax incentives and more to get anyone there

Without the support of the Governments its hard to see how this PNG team would have been granted a licence at this stage. However, having politicians run the press conference makes it come across as way to political.

This is why most people are finding it hard to get excited about this announcement.

The politicians should have stepped aside, allowed the NRL to announce the team and provide an opportunity to answer questions about the partnership later in the afternoon.
This was a proposition advanced by PNG Gov years ago & re-proposed by Marape to an enthusiastic Albo in 2022 (as opposed to it being an NRL led proposition)

And both Governments are putting large $ to this which usually requires some form of justification to its peoples. Adding to that is this is an international endevour so there is nothing strange about this being a politician run conference.

I thought it was boring except for watching Albanese being desperate in his attempts to attach himself & present as being a "leader".

Anyone who thinks the arl should turn down between 750 million and a billion dollars is a fruit loop

Fumblers are getting over a billion for a team in a tiny place like Tasmania and they are all supportive of it

League is the national sport of png

Test matches v Australia will end up on par with origin

How does this not matter to you when it's the exact reason why the team is being brought in?

They don't warrant inclusion otherwise.
Successful people use market forces to their advantage.

If the Government wants to do this, our sport should be taking advantage of it.

I want to hear from the Bid team and Andrew Hill who have claimed in the past they don't require the extra funds to be successful in the NRL. I want to hear how that is the case. What is their business plan for that. Obviously, you're not going to turn down the money though.

He was interviewed about a year or 2 ago, when I heard they were setting up camp in Cairns for a pacifika style team, back then Andrew Hill had all these plans, but it was going to be roughly a 50 million raised bid, from the investors in png, all of a sudden in swooped albo, and the whole thing turned into a monster 600 mil, you can all blame him or pat convoy for this, that's the sports minister who funds Pacificsports that sponsors RU Fiji drua and other foreign countries sports teams, they then pull their funding out once the team is self sustainabe, but they use our tax payer money to do it...
This however, is not funded by them, they've set it up the same way, earlier by funding grassroots with Joe grima (anyone remember the 5 mil going to grass roots last year) this png nrl team is getting paid out of the defence budget, it's a very small percentage, that the government thinks is value for money in terms of security

How many Aus domestic sports have introduced an overseas club from a country other than NZ? Only one I can think of is NBL going yo Singapore.

That said, I can only see this lasting a few years and could be a combo breaker for our wooden spoon run should we win the next 3.

I know politics and sport have always gone hand in hand since Greek times but is this the first politically motivated prof sports club ever to come into existence?
