I'm interested in the PNG club being owned by superannuation funds. That seems to have slipped under everyone's radar. Have they put anything in the pot, why are they owning it, what are they offering? There was no talk of private ownership of a govt funded club previously?

Its a shame the national RU team has already taken it. PNG Pukpuk

Still think PNG Tribe would be a good option

One Rugby League Tribe and all that

They are going back sh...t crazy

Interesting how much AFL people hate Vlandys. Weren't bothered by Gallop or Greenberg. Kinda like NSW fans hating King Wally. Wonder why lol?!

Lmao this is funny

They sure feel threatened

Really?

Why would you be so confident of that?

The last time RL attempted rapid expansion there was a bloodbath of dead clubs

Again, there are no local PNG players in the NRL at the moment.

It will need to be overwhelmingly players from Australia / NZ.....or they will be continuously thrashed

That's funny considering there is one PNG player in the AFL. Or has been the past few years, Oea from the suns. He came through an AFL academy too, we should hit the government up for some increased funding for AFL development in PNG too.
Just post this, and watch them clam up

His questions are fair.

Super funds would suggest they invested some money in

It also shows how confident png investors are that this team is going to be a huge success
Maybe the ownership model (Super fund) has something to do with the treatment of player earnings in a tax free environment & is set up specifically in that way to achieve that purpose.

true but they were made out to be the new owners of the club. I wonder what they have paid for that ownership and to who? It was all very hush hush about that apart from that one line in one article.

I think this is some journalists mistake.
The 2 super funds in PNG are not controlled by the Government and do not do any bidding for the Government.
They also do not invest in Sports Teams and would not be putting any money into this.
Also they are in competition with each other, so they would never combine in such a venture.

It did seem a random one line! So who does own the PNG club? Is it NRL or PNGRL?

Okay, so here's the fly in the ointment. If it's the case that one of these two privately owned Superannuation fund's is the primary owner of the club, then it'd be really interesting who the managers are of this fund, as they'll be the people who benefit mostly from this investment.

Super funds could’ve invested because they think it will be worth a lot of money down the track

If a journo just randomly made it up that would be weird

The broncos are listed on the sharemarket and their original investor included a stockbroker

The board will be set by the nrl and png govt so they have no say on the club

And the people who benefit from super funds are the members not managers so much

If it’s true it’s just an investment for them to make money from owning / selling it down the track like any other investment they make

It’s hard to work out what money they would’ve put in since the Aussie and png govt are paying for everything so it could be bs

The members of a superannuation fund only own units in the fund, all actual assets are owned by the funds trustee, who typically is the funds management. Superannuation mismanagement by private finance companies is one of the main reasons why Self Managed Superannuation funds of became so popular. The amount of money that was siphoned away from everyday people and ended up with rich corporations during the 2007/2008 GFC was phenomenal. If this turns out to be true, then I can't help but think this whole undertaking is going to be the front for a huge money laundering scheme, especially with the PNG governments track record. Anyway, even if it is , the PNG NRL franchise will be posting massive profits rivalling any sporting team in the world as all the dirty money comes flooding in.
