There is a comments section under that video & some poster named trentisnotthereanymore predicted the NRL to have much larger tv rights money which in turn will allow PNG entry into the competition in 2020-2022.

For a prediction going back over a decade that wasnt a bad stab at it.

Nrl seem to be cooling on investing in super league

Can’t see non Sydney clubs or the qrl allowing conferences either

Everyone wants to play the Sydney clubs
Conferences only work if everyone is segemented off from each other, by the furtherest team inwards
So
*NZ plus the most eastern teams in Nsw,
*Perth and most western Nsw teams,
*PnG and most northern clubs (qld),
*Storm plus most southern nsw teams
That way no one can claim anything other than geographic affiliation, there's no bias or fixing, no excuses to be in whatever Conference, these are the team's you play more often, home and away, and they all include a far away destination roped in, so travel is shared among each pool, its the only way people can make a mockery out of it

Not sure it’s about wanting to play the Sydney clubs- more not wanting the Sydney clubs to have an even bigger travel advantage which will likely lead to a recruitment advantage
Correct, Sydney will always get the favourable picks due to the lack of travel

Nrl journo who talked about it with Sydney conferences and the rest

They mentioned high crowds from more derbies

And someone showed the travel wasn’t much more for non Sydney teams

Even if the powerful Sydney clubs push for it they don’t have the numbers

It does open the potential for two top five semi finals series and two grand finals, one in Sydney and one in Brisbane

Followed by a superbowl type game

The other option is retain as is and a top ten finals system

The biggest stumbling block, other than how to split them, is what does winning a conference mean to teams and fans?

In MLB, which is probably the most split comp in the US, there is a real prestige in winning either the National or American league penant. Not as prestigious as the world series but still big. Also, rivalries in each league are often bigger than geographical rivals in inter-conference games.

The NRL when it gets to 20 teams should keep it simple.

Each team plays each other once = 19 rounds.

Then split into 4 groups of 5 who play each other again = 23 rounds.

Groups:
Queensland: Brisbane, Dolphins, Gold Coast, North Queensland, PNG
South: Canberra, Cronulla, St George Illawarra, Melbourne, Warriors
West: Canterbury, Parramatta, Penrith, Perth, Wests Tigers
North/City: Manly, Newcastle, Roosters, Souths, TBA

If team 20 is a Queensland team you could slot them into the Queensland group and move PNG into the North/City group. If it’s NZ2 you could swap Melbourne into North/City group and put NZ2 into the south group.

Anyway, just spitballing, hope that's OK with Chairman Pipsqueak.

Switch warriors and souths and it's the exactly same as my separation of pools, and TBA is =Nz2
(And Call qld= Northern pool, call your north/city=Eastern pool)

It’s pretty much just Sydney calling for a Sydney conference which should tell you all you need to know

The benefits of two conference

1. More derbies = higher crowds and tv ratings (travel times don’t change much from current)

2. Top five finals series is superior to top 8

3. Sydney and Brisbane grand finals (Suncorp and Allianz)

4. Super Bowl at Accor or open to bidding

5. More finals games means way higher tv ratings and nrl making more money from selling finals tickets

If they retain the current system with 20 teams then it will be a top ten format

I dont mind two conference when going to 20. Has to be done right in terms of whose in what, has to be as fair as possible in terms of travel and tv covg and the conf championship games need to be major hyped up with decent winning money in their own right. Then the final needs to be on the road rotated around the country.
