Redcliffe Dolphins Qcup- Dolphins
Port Moresby Hunters- PNG Hunters
I think they’ll definitely carry the name of the country. The PNG PM Marape wants this team to unite the entire country.

I actually think it’s more likely we’ll end up with The Hunters or The Scorpions or The Stingers than the team carrying the name of a specific location or city of PNG.

My point was that the Queensland Cup team can revert to " port mosbey " and the NRL side " PNG" so both can be the "Hunters "

Is QRL still clinging on to that false notion that they are not just a reserve grade for nrl?
What? It's like you're an Englishman living in Perth or something.
Most Queensland Cup teams have very long proud history and each represent a unique geographical area . People play entire careers in Q Cup with much pride and the comp is often won by the teams least represented in the NRL.
Stick to bullshiting about Perth.

While these days the ultimate goal for 95% of Q-Cup players is to make NRL - you’re absolutely right in your assessment. People do have a lot of pride for the clubs they play for in Cup.

I would say more around 40%. Nrl squad of 30- 17 on game day- around 5 injured leaves about 8 spread over roughly 2 clubs, so 4 out of a squad of 30 are on a base NRL contract on average, maybe a small handful outside of them are under the illusion that they may still make it but it's pretty rare and usually bring about a bit of a Cinderella story when it happens like Tray Fuller for the Dolphins.

NSW Cup is a completely different set-up. Polar opposites.

Not sure how much exposure you have with Q-Cup from a ground (player) level but nah, 40% is a crazily low number, that’s basically saying only 40% of Queensland based rugby league players want to play NRL. I don’t agree with you there. You don’t continue through the grades like that if you don’t have aspirations of making it to the NRL and earning a contract to play professionally.

All have those aspirations and train for it. Whether they make it or don’t is another topic. The search for an NRL debut never stops and some hope they can make it later in life like ie C.Walker. Cinderella stories or not, you need something to keep driving you to play at your best at the level you’re at and earning an NRL gig (if you’re playing top grade Q-Cup) can set you up fairly well in life. Much more than simply Q-Cup can.

To your point though that doesn’t take away from the fact that these guys play their heart out in cup for whatever club they are signed to.

Well we do disagree in part. Majority of NRL players are identified and contracted before first grade. If you came of age and entered a first grade team without an NRL team contacting you, you would be in a very very small group to then make it.. they all know that, that's their lives. Having a lottery ticket and thinking you're good chance of winning it are 2 very different things.
Besides, do you realise how much of an accomplishment it is to make Q-Cup? For a lot of players outside the small contigent I've outlined are very proud to make first grade.

Of course I realise how much of an accomplishment it is. A few lifelong friends made it to Q-Cup first grade and for them it was an amazing and proud achievement.

But making it there wasn’t the conclusion of a journey, they all had aspirations to go beyond it regardless of how distant and improbable that goal may have seemed.

Kids these days are even more fortunate with the systems in place. They are all a much better chance for the opportunities available at stepping up but again whether they do or don’t is another matter all together. All my time involved with Magpies or Wynnum or Pride at various stages I never met a first grader who didn’t want to try make it to NRL even for a game. Didn’t matter if they were 19 or 35 (as improbable and unrealistic as it was). That’s all I’m saying here.

I think we agree on the basis of your opinion that q-cup is a proud achievement. Whatever we believe otherwise (players within wanting to keep rising the levels of rugby league) doesn’t matter.
