Wouldn't be surprised if some mining company becomes the major sponsor of the PNG team. But the reason is to advertise themselves (before people jump in, I know the purpose of sponsoring a team is to advertise your business). Otherwise, if these multinationals were really interested in an NRL team they would have driven it and put up the 600m or a big chunk themselves for a team rather than us Aussie taxpayers.
Im sure theres some sweet deals being hatched between the PNG govt and big PNG mining for sponsorship 'opportunities'

Told you before Id rather the WA money be going to teenage suicide prevention or homelessness solutions, but at least our money is being spent in our state for the benefit of a few of our people.
Overseas charity is commendable for a rich country like Australia, but if your going to be charitable spend it where it makes a difference to people and their priority needs. Not sure building luxury compounds for millionaire sportsmen is high on the general populations priority list in PNG.
If you object so much to govt money going to sporting teams you should boycott the Perth bears

Indeed don’t get seats in the new stands the 300 million will build and give the money you save to charity

Me I wants govts to spend more on league. We are way behind afl and we’re the bigger sport

Wb being the really crap stock picker he is lost 50 percent on lihir gold 20 years ago which has since been taken over by a major

The sponsorships they get from foreign mining companies will probably put them on par with the biggest Aussie clubs

Same with corporate game day revenue it will make up for the plebs paying ten bucks or less for tickets

If I boycotted everything I didnt agree with I'd not do much, buy much or eat much lol. I can dislike a decision but accept a decision is made. Its called being an adult.

I do give to charity, but I also spend some of my hard earned on enjoying myself, so thanks for the pompous advice but I will be buying a membership to the new Perth club and enjoying the facilities some of my tax money has paid for.

Good for you, me I want Govt to prioritise spending our money on things that make life better for people. each to their own.

Ah well I’m happy not being a hypocrite

I’m happy Perth is getting up to 600 million and even more happy png is getting 800 million plus

Seeing Canberra and Brisbane get new rectangular stadia would be brilliant too instead of them wasting money on afl grounds

Why would a team that is so 'minted' with so many sponsors lining up need to put their hand out for Australian government aid?
the hand out is about half, the other half is for rest of pasifika. but to the point ya need cash injections to build foundations and infrastructure to eventually have an appealing product that sponsors will want to invest in. ie spend money to make money. sponsors aint gonna sponsor thin air. do ya even understand what ya saying cob?

alwaysloser, forums resident loser and now with added edition of losing simples logic.

“The Gross Regional Product (GRP) of Far North Queensland (FNQ) in 2022/23 was $19,809 million. This was 4.26% of Queensland's Gross State Product (GSP). In June 2023, the GRP of FNQ was $24,156 million. “

Cowboys sponsorship ??? Ten million pa

“As of December 2023, Papua New Guinea's (PNG) gross domestic product (GDP) was $30.93 billion”

PNG will be fine for sponsors @Canard

Their economy is larger than the one that supports the cowboys

The "economy" that supports the Cowboys is Australia, and is not based on some imaginary line that you have plucked out of your arse.

PNG will be the lowest value team in terms of TV market, by some margin. Especially in Australia. There merchandise, corporate and ticket sales will be the lowest by far, also.

There no1 sponsor is and will be, you and I, the Australian tax payer.

Actually I'm taking a big leap in assuming you pay tax.

Hahahha ahahahhaa
Hahahahaa

Someone didn’t study economics did they

Don’t worry the North Queensland economy should catch up with png in 50 years

Cowboys leagues also pull 76 million from gambling revenue out of the nth qld economy / population

For what it's worth, I reckon they will have a huge "novelty value" following. I can remember being amazed at the popularity of their junior teams playing barefoot when touring Australia eons ago. C'mon guys and gals, this is the NRL and they won't let the franchise sink because it's in their best interests to ensure at least a modicum of success.

They'll probably either:

Become everyone's fave second team, as we all love an underdog and a rags to riches story

or

Become hated by everyone due to being a premier no-one likes pet project and being allowed an effective salary much higher than anyone else through the tax dodge.

Hard to say which way it will go. Probably depends on their results. If theyre crap they'll get the pity vote, if they're winning they'll be disliked.

The PNG NRL side is likely to be ignored by the Australian public due to geographic and cultural differences, leading to a lack of strong connection with local fans.

Limited media coverage and exposure of the team in Australia makes it difficult for fans to engage with the squad.

Finally, Australia's focus on its own NRL teams and domestic players will overshadows international representation, contributing to the PNG side's lack of attention.

By the way, arguing that PNG will dwarf a Queensland RL team in terms of revenue, and that PNG is an economic powerhouse, will do me.
