Lae, Goroka and Mt Hagen are in Provinces that have populations bigger than Port Moresby.
But Lae's small rugby league stadium would only hold about 6000-7000 people, while Goroka and Mt Hagen's would be even less than that.
There would be more fans outside the stadiums then those inside it.

Comparing the AFL to the NRL, which is led by colourful ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys, Cochrane thinks the AFL is lacking a little bit of ‘pizzazz’.

He pointed to the NRL’s push into Vegas and Papua New Guinea with rugby league never standing still to find growth, and while the AFL is also trying to spread its wings with Opening Round, Cochrane is of the belief that the season could start off with a bigger bang if the code became more imaginative.

“But just using that (Vegas) as an example, the NRL are really outsmarting us at the moment. Perhaps Melbourne gets a bit insulated compared to people in Sydney and Brisbane… but V’Landys, love him or hate him, he’s got some pizzazz and he reminds me a lot of Gil (McLachlan).

“That’s how it’s looking (that Goyder will stay on). I haven’t spoken with Richard for some time, it would be unfair for me to comment on what he’s looking for. But I want to see more pizzazz in the AFL because the NRL – look at the $600m deal they did with the government over the team in Papua New Guinea. You have to give them 10/10 for being on the front foot.

MCKILLOP: So, we're not just toying around, as that gentleman put it? I mean, is funding an NRL team in Port Moresby going to cut it when it comes to securing our geopolitical place in the world?

MARLES: Look, I think actually that step has been really important because we need to be much more imaginative about how we improve our relations with the countries of the region. And one of the things that we have which is such an advantage for us in terms of countries in the Pacific is a sense of affinity. There's a whole lot of ways in which the countries of the Pacific and the peoples of the Pacific look to Australia. Now, one of those is sport. You know, rugby league is a massive sport in PNG and this has been a long held dream of Papua New Guinea to have a team in the NRL. And to now see the realisation of that dream, you know, greatly connects us with that country. And it's something that no one else can do, no other country can do. And so, you know, I think is actually a really important step forward and it's part of a suite of measures that we've taken which sees our relationship with Papua New Guinea closer today than it's ever been and that's really important. And yes, that's happening in a kind of cultural, sports cultural area like rugby league, but it's happening in defence. Our defence-to-defence relationship with Papua New Guinea has never been closer. We've never been doing more exercises, operations, looking at joint recruitment, you know, a whole range of areas where we are very close in that respect. We're about to, you know, we've announced that we'll be doing a Defence Cooperation Agreement with Papua New Guinea. These are really important steps forward. And from the perspective of Cairns, that matters because in so many ways, Cairns is our more than our gateway, it's really our connection, I think, with PNG. And, you know, there's a lot of PNG expats who are in Cairns. Cairns is such an asset in terms of our relationship with Papua New Guinea and that's only going to become more so going forward.

There is no official Rugby League Academy in this part of PNG yet so hopefully this visit means that they are expending to other Provinces as well now.

A great day spent at Wabag Primary School to discuss Enga province's future, not only in our growing academy pathways, but also in the future of PNG rugby league on the road to season 2028.
Led by their esteemed head master Mr Undip, Wabag Primary School is home to 4,658 students, making it one of, if not the largest primary school in the nation. Also involved in our visit was Mr Kawi - Registrar & Team Manager of Wabag Primary Schools RL team and Jonah Mckay - Provincial Sports coordinator & president Enga schools Rugby league, both of which will play equally important roles in the future of rugby league in Enga.
The day was topped off with a visit to one of the Bid's great supporters, Chairman of the PNGRFL, Asia-Pacific Rugby League and Enga Provincial Administrator - Mr Sandis Tsaka.
A special thanks to our Mt Hagen Academy Head Coach - Bobby Koke and Mt Hagen Academy TM - Tucker Saki for their company during the visit.
The future of Engan rugby league is very bright.
