PNG has an nrl team which attracted 850 million in govt investment and tax incentives worth hundreds more

Other bids are struggling to attract 50 million
Even this is disingenuous.

The $60M per year, was the carrot from the Australian Govt to create a team.

Not the other way around.

Which can be interpreted as:

1. No private investors are willing to put their hard earned to invest in a team to the level that the NRL wants despite people on here saying owning a club will bring rivers of gold or is a licence to print money given the size of the annual grant.

2. You only get 1 Albo (replace with Alan Bond in Kerry Packer's case) in your lifetime and PVL has been lucky to get a 'Bond' to tip in $600m of Australian taxpayers money.
Not to mention WA has had $50mill in private investment and $60mill+ in public investment offered. Un-precedented for an NRL club (other than the PNG feds largesse)

te kaha stadium is being built for Ru lol.
Itd be like Perh Bears playing at Optus and saying the WA govt invested $1.8bill in the club.
Hbf park was built for union and soccer

Heck the wa govt won’t even spend a cent on it for rugby league

Politicians in png aren’t afraid to be associated with rugby league unlike in wa

So one place wants a rugby league club badly and one doesn’t

And you’re a fan of the one that doesn’t and hanging sh@t on the one that does ?
One makes sense and brings value to the NRL, one is unwanted by players, coaches and clubs and will only exist because of a massive Govt hand out. But hey the local people want it so best of luck to them.

Perth only makes sense for people trying to make an afl lite competition because they are insecure

Ignoring places that actually like the code for places that don’t is the height of stupidity

Most of wa don’t want a team

The media hate the idea

Even the premier who is supposedly a fan is ashamed to back the club in a meaningful way

PNG once established will produce more jnrl players in one year than Perth will in ten years

Dots on a map is a really bad way to do expansion

Trying to shove the sport down people’s throats is what afl has done and it hasn’t worked. Perth is just apathetic towards rugby league

I was watching Kenty today ..he said that Cook has responded to some back room dealings from the Perth media particularly Kerry Stokes and of course the AFL…he knows which side the bread is buttered

Kenty goes on a bit of rant giving it to Cook and people from Perth generally …it’s not a bad watch actually …. KenTy is way less insufferable these days since the tree incident

How brave!

To embrace the free money being offered up.

Takes real balls to do that

He should come to Perth so we could all take turns throwing him at the Fig tree at the back of HBF park! We could charge $10 a throw with all proceeds to Save the Bears.

That tax free thing is gunna motivate some players to play over there for a year or two …never underestimate what a tight ass will put up with for more money….

I can’t see Nathan Cleary or Ponga going over there though …

Hopefully they do, because when they find out they still have to pay the same tax in Australia, they might walk out on the contract.

Australian tax residency laws are pretty strict, and going for 1 or 2 years is going to result in people deemed to be Australian residents for tax purposes. There's a shitload of case law about it. What's really going to f**k a lot of players over is PNG are not going to withhold any tax, so 100% of the tax is going to be due at year end, and players are going to get a massive bill.

Breaking News broken exclusively by LU Poster.

PNG players to pay tax despite being promised they won’t have to.

I did wonder this, money I earn in uk I get taxed on here
only way around it I think is if you live outside Australia for more than 6 months of year or have a permenant home overseas And therefore are deemed not an Australian resident for tax purposes. I’m sure the players financial advisors will be looking for the loop holes.

The fact that is literally the ONLY thing that could attract players, shows how much the NRL were shitting themselves about this.

If a player only signs for 1 or 2 years, most would likely fail the domicile test. They won't have set up a permanent place of abode overseas, especially given they will be living in the compound. The regular trips to work in Australia don't really help either.

Geeez let’s hope the players read this post before they sign with PNG.

Imagine being told you won’t be taxed only for the ATO to come after you .

It seems everyone’s been mislead, including the government. Lucky we have you on these boards to set the record straight.
