I'm not sure why the club didn't just make something up about niggles needing to be addressed/rested before training camp. Would be very believable for someone with Kalyn's injury history and would have avoided this scrutiny.

But yes it is rather funny that suddenly everyone seems to care about internationals, the NRL included.

The NRL has been treating the international game as irrelevant for years and now suddenly they’re going to investigate a player because he’s treating it as the same non-event they the NRL has for years. It’s ridiculous.

If KP is this adamant he wants to win a comp here then let us hope it extends to him working with O’Sullivan and the coaches over the next 12-18 months in building that side.

Weidler claiming NRL are discussing banning KP from games next season. Does not specify which games. A year after he proved he was the best player on the planet in the same year his career almost ended from concussions. I hate these people. They are a joke.

If they did that and it got taken to court there is no way the NRL would have a case based on precedent alone. Dozens of players have made themselves unavailable for selection from various rep teams previously and there has never been criticism let alone sanction in fact Stefano Utoikamanu recently made himself unavailable for Tonga/Samoa so he could hit the ground running at the storm and was widely praise. All this shows is how certain bottom feeders (journos) push their agendas.

Wait what? Banning him from NRL games? Wtf are they smoking?

This criticism has gotten way out of hand. I get their point, but the absolute utmost punishment he should get is a lack of consideration for future rep selection - and that's 100% up to the selectors and the coach of QLD/Aus at the time.

I don't get why everyone is so upset. Players have dipped in and out of the rep scene for any number of bullshit reasons over the years. The most harshly punished i can recall was Jamie Lyon... but even then his punishment was simply that the selectors overlooked him from that point on.

I'm not sure if everyone is upset,
What has really happened is that Ponga and his dad were going to put a statement out about this, they told the Knights officials so the Knights got on top of it.
The problem is that there are correct channels in regards to representative teams and availability etc.
Other players, including Lyon, went through the correct channels and talked to the coaches and officials from the ARL. The Pongas haven't done that, and it looks pretty arrogant from an outside point of view.
For your team it could cause other concerns as Ponga has painted a larger target on his back. Any toilet trysts, or other situations, in the off season will be fully attacked by the mangy feral dogs, aka the media.
To me it's just bad management by his dad, nothing more, nothing less, and I'm sure all you have seen that before.

Sure, yeah, it's just a bit of a boo-hoo to me. We must be in a pretty good position as a sport if this passes the bar for scandal.

What we're talking about is banning a bloke from actual games of football - for his CLUB - because his management and the Knights bottled a few phone calls. Some egos were bruised is what has happened.

Probably so, but it is in NRL contract that you have to be available for International selection barring injury, or if you have been given permission to not play, and your club has to let the player play.
So technically it could be a legal thing, PVL has even entered the discussion. I'll link it for you.

ARL Commission boss Peter V’landys has expressed his disappointment in Kalyn Ponga and will launch an investigation into the Newcastle champion’s decision to stand down from Australian selection.
V’landys has been left stunned by Ponga’s move to rule himself out of the upcoming Pacific Championships in a move that could have ramifications for the appetite of NRL stars to play international football.
The Dally M sensation was on the brink of a maiden green-and-gold jersey, with Ponga having been selected in a preliminary Australian squad for Tests against Tonga and New Zealand in October.
It is understood the Knights were contacted on Tuesday morning about Ponga’s selection in that squad, prompting the Newcastle skipper to release a statement explaining his decision to reject an Australian jumper.

V’landys, as ARLC chair, rubberstamps key decisions made on the national side and he won’t stand for NRL players potentially undermining the prestige of representing one of Australia’s most iconic sporting teams.
“It’s quite surprising and disappointing that anyone would contemplate not taking that honour of representing your country,” V’landys said of Ponga’s stance.
Asked if he will force Ponga to play for Australia in future, he added: “Well, I don’t want to use the word force, but I’m going to investigate this one, put it that way.
“For me, what’s more disappointing is when I was a kid, my dream was to play for Australia, to represent your country.

“As a sportsperson, that should be your ambition in any sport – to represent your country.
“That’s what this point is for me.
“The thing that hurts me the most is that you don’t want to represent your country and wear the green and gold.
“Kids and people would dream to represent their country in anything.”
Australia coach Mal Meninga is determined to select players totally committed to the Kangaroos.

The issue first reached a flashpoint at the 2017 World Cup when then Sharks prop Andrew Fifita sensationally rejected Australian selection to represent Tonga.
The NRL’s club licensing agreements make it clear that the 17 franchises must make their players available for representative selection.
Those clauses are generally overlooked where there is a legitimate reason for a player withdrawing from representative football such as injury or retirement after long service for state or country.
Ponga adopted a similar stance last year when he withdrew from Queensland Origin calculations.
On that occasion, he was making his comeback from a long stint on the sidelines following a series of concussions and it was accepted by Maroons coach Billy Slater as a legitimate explanation.
In this instance, V’landys will take a deeper look at his reasoning given Ponga’s Knights contract states that a player must make himself available for representative football.

V’landys said Ponga and other NRL players are bound by contracting rules and cannot simply stand down of their volition because they don’t feel like playing for Australia.
“The rules are pretty descriptive now,” V’landys said.
“There’s contractual obligations and club license obligations.
“When you sign a player contract, you make yourself available to play for your country – and in the club licence, the club has to release a player for representative duties.
“So it’s already covered off.
“What players have to understand, the pinnacle of our game is to wear the green and gold of Australia.
“To represent your country, there’s no greater honour than to represent Australia and put that green and gold on.
“Mal Meninga has done a great job in highlighting to all the players how honoured they should be to wear the green and gold of Australia.”

Ponga insists he has great respect for the Australia jumper, but wants to hit the ground running in pre-season in his quest to skipper Newcastle to a premiership.
“I want to win a comp, for me anything short of that, isn’t success,” Ponga said.
“My focus has never shifted from wanting to win a premiership with the Knights, that has been my goal since I joined the club in 2018 and continues to be my focus.
“When I’m done, I want to look back at my career with a positive reflection, including people saying he was a great signing and represented our community to the best of his ability.
“For now, I don’t feel like I have earned that yet, that’s why I have made this decision and will work hard every day to chase those goals.”
Kangaroos coach Meninga told this masthead last month that he wanted players passionate about the green-and-gold jumper after seeing NSW Origin stars Jarome Luai and Brian To’o pledge their allegiance to Samoa.
“Players are making some really good decisions about who they want to play with,” Meninga said.
“I want to pick players for Australia that want to put that Kangaroo jersey on.
“The pinnacle of any game is to pull on your country’s jersey.
“People assume that Origin is the benchmark for players, but anyone who loves their country aspires to go one step further than that.
“Representing your country is your greatest personal reward and it doesn’t get any bigger than pulling on a Kangaroos jersey.”

People latch on to whatever they can go pile shit on to the headline grabbers.

Now we're upset about the "right channels". Give me a break. A lot of speculation "the Pongas were going to do it" etc etc. Ultimately none of these people know shit.

The same people crying now are the same ones who bag him when he crushes an origin game "Knights fans must be furious he plays like this for QLD etc". EAD you bunch of trolls.

Good luck to the NRL enforcing any legalities given their previous lack of action. The knights could throw any number of precedents of players doing the exact same thing as Ponga and not being sanctioned, I also imagine the RLPA won’t sit there silently watching one of their most high profile players essentially being discriminated against.

If that does end up happening to him then it’s completely f**ked up. There are literally players in the comp that have been involved in domestic violence or endangering the public, and they’re gonna come after a player who decided not to play in a game where he was 100% going to risk copping another head knock from playing in the forwards somewhere in a game that the NRL themselves have treated as a non-event for years? Doesn’t add up.

In terms of how it was handled and not following the correct channels: I assume if Ponga, his Dad, the Knights were aware it wasn’t allowed or there were certain channels that’s what would have happened. This isn’t a common occurrence as all the other players not wanting to play in end of season tests just lie about or exaggerate injuries usually. You mention Lyon but he’s really the only one and not within this decade. He called Slater when he opted out of QLD selection last year which you could argue he should have done this time, but we don’t know any of the context behind it.

Ponga should have just lied about having an injury like players who don’t want to play in the tests do every single year. He and the club obviously didn’t think of that though as how could you possibly predict that a club captain wanting to be there from the start of pre-season could possibly be turned into a bad thing.

The whole idea that he could be suspended for not being available is a farce. Didn’t PVL allow Taylan May to play in the finals series a couple of years back and delayed a suspension because it was “good for the fans” or something to that effect? Absolutely laughable what’s acceptable and what’s not in this game sometimes.
