Poor Crowd Figure

- What the NRL clubs wanted
- What the ARL wanted
- What the RFL wanted
- What the NZRL agreed with

Shows that despite the fact that we are arguably the second best team going around we are still treated like the dumb cousin by the RFL and ARL.

What? Suncorp getting an international?? No... it can't be!

About friggin time! It has been deadset years since we've had a test match here and imo it's an absolute disgrace. Supposedly the second biggest RL city in the world constantly losing out to Sydney... and Newcastle.

Note: no disrespect at all to Newcastle, but I'm sure plenty of people did travel the 2 hours to sydney to see any test match over the past few years. We've had at least 1000km between us and the Roos for aaaages.

I find it hard to believe that the City v Country will be played at the SFS.

You will be a believer when the 2005 draw comes out in November.

Payback to the Stadium for the QLD Semi Final issue this year.

I agree. If it was a proper test match, it would have easily got 20,000 and massive TV figures.

Channel 9 didn't show the full test match in Townsville in 2000 (which attracted 21,000 fans), I doubt they would have shown it. :(

I believe last weekend's game should have been a double header, held on Friday or Sunday. The Kangaroos and Kiwis playing the main game as part of the Tri Series (replacing the London fixture). The PNG Kumuls could have played the Junior Roos as a curtain raiser. That would have given PNG a chance to be on TV, be it FTA or Pay.

I truly think if Australia v PNG played a proper test match and it was televised then the ratings would surprise the hell out of Channel Nine.

This needs to be in the next TV contract as a matter of priority - any Test matches in Australia MUST be televised at least in NSW and Qld, and any test matches v GB or NZ MUST be televised nationwide.

Good point about the curtain raiser - with the TV cameras all set up it makes it a lot easier to televise it (like they do with the Arrive Alive Cup), but I doubt many people are interested in seeing the Junior Roos play PNG.

However, I believe hundreds of thousands of people would watch Australia play PNG in a proper test match. The cost of covering it would be more than made up for in the audience it would get.

Next year if they persist with this Tri-Nations idea we should definitely have one of the Aus v NZ matches in Australia. Would get a much bigger crowd than in London or Reading or where ever and would generate more interest in Aus for the GB leg.

I just think that more people will watch test matches than people expect.

In 2002 the Lions test was a thrashing but despite the blow out score, it averaged the biggest TV audience for any Friday night show in Sydney and Brisbane.

City v Country attracts very big audiences, this is a similar sort of status event.

RL fans will want to see the all-star Kangaroos lineup in action.

There isn't any real other sports action in October.

In 1992, I don't have the figures, but I remember a lot of people watching the test v PNG and being interested.

This is where I'm curious. The ARL may retain the stance (arguably a lazy one) that hosting tests in October is hard work. However, why would the NRL clubs want the game overseas?

The NRL didn't care if the games were played in Siberia, but they wanted the game played on the weekend that it is being played, you couldn't really move the tournament any further back, and not sure where you could have it any earlier.

I forgot that the NRL clubs are reluctant for a full test the weekend after the NRL GF, they want the rest for R&R.

You don't promote. It's not a Test. No wonder the crowd was small.

Maybe some lessons for next time ARL.
