Western Suburbs Magpies Vs Cronulla Sharks
Leichhardt Oval, Saturday, May 1
Kick-off: 1.00pm
Referee: Chris Sutton

The first game of this Saturday’s double-header at Leichhardt Oval shapes up as a beauty. Western Suburbs have started the season on fire and, for a team which was a unlikely starter in the NSW Cup in 2010, the Sharks have surpassed expectations. Sharks halfback Scott Porter finds himself in the frame for City Origin selection with key injuries in the NRL. The Sharks also have Adam Cuthbertson who was selected for City last year before being ruled out by injury. Throw in youngsters like Lancen Juodo, Ian James and Ricky Leutele and the Sharks are looking odds on to be around some finals time. For the Magpies, the back-row of Jamie Sharkie, Josh Davis and Kurt Kara have been the backbone of their early season form. All three are equally well equipped in attack and defence. Despite being named by Coach Leo Epifania, Wests halfback Nathan Waters has been included on the Wests Tigers bench for their clash against the Sydney Roosters at Campbelltown on Sunday. The question on everyone’s lips is can the Magpies win without their captain?

i reckon hes a decent player but are they seriously going to pick somebody out of reggies

This thread needs more Soward talk.

The bloke won five eight of the year last year, his team were MP's thanks to him, this year his team is 6-1 and he also has a lot to do with that.

Why is he continually overlooked for blokes not in nearly as good a form? (ie. Bird, Barrett, Carney - not playing 6, Gidley, etc...)

I know the media says he needs to prove himself in semi's before getting a shot at rep footy, but how would a go in City Country hurt. (also, when did Carney ever prove himself at semi final level...)

Just doesnt make sense.

at the moment he would be my five eighth for NSW, at the moment.. no other FE has proved themselves imo like he has, despite the lack of experience in semi finals as some people might argue, i think he definitely deserves a CvC jersey

And Carney has? Or Gidley (NSW have gone so well in the last few years with him as Capt or in the team)?

I also don't remember Barrett or Bird lifting a premiership trophy for dominating a semi final series.

Willie Mason, Todd Carney and Timana Tahu in line for Country selection
By Dean Ritchie
April 30, 2010
Three rebels and a defector are poised to make spectacular returns to representative rugby league next week for the Country side to play City in Port Macquarie.

The Daily Telegraph revealed Country selectors were considering naming Greg Bird at lock or five-eighth along with Willie Mason, Todd Carney and Timana Tahu for the annual match next Friday night.

In other surprising selection news, Newcastle Knights winger Akuila Uate is certain to be named on the Country wing.

Mason and Tahu are being discussed by Country selectors but their inclusion would depend on which players Australia selectors take for the Test against New Zealand, also next Friday. Once the Kangaroos are chosen, City and Country would queue for the remaining players.

If Test selectors take Josh Perry, Brent Kite and Michael Weyman, Mason would then be called into the Country side and probably play off the interchange bench.

It would cap a remarkable revival for Mason, who just three months ago was left wondering whether he would find a club after being dumped by Sydney Roosters.

His form for the North Queensland Cowboys has been robust in recent weeks.

"If Willie was to get a call-up, it would be a reflection of his form," Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr said.

"Over the last few weeks he has been terrific. We were always confident once he recovered from that knee reconstruction he would get back to his best form.

"It (Country selection) would be a good reward and certainly add to their team."

Bird, back in the NRL after a stint with Catalans in France, is certain to be in Country colours.

He is likely to be at lock with either Trent Barrett or Todd Carney slotted in at five-eighth. Canterbury and incumbent New South Wales halfback Brett Kimmorley should win the No. 7 jumper.

Tahu, back in the NRL after a stint with the Wallabies, will come into calculations if the Test selectors take St George Illawarra winger Brett Morris.

Morris, Lote Tuqiri and Jarryd Hayne are locked in a three-way battle for Test selection on the wing.

Provided he is overlooked for Australia, Jamie Lyon is expected to partner Matt Cooper in the Country centres.

Dragons utility Beau Scott - currently playing centre for the Dragons - is certain to find himself a place in the Country team.

Country coach Laurie Daley has numerous back-rowers available, including Bird, Glenn Stewart, Ben Creagh and Anthony Laffranchi. Daley will have to see which of these players wins Kangaroos selection.

Kurt Gidley will be first picked for Country, at fullback, but if he is a bench player for Australia, look for Canberra's rising star Josh Dugan to be in the Country No. 1 jumper.

The Australia, City and Country teams will all be announced on Sunday night.

uate for country jersey, good player but:crazy::crazy:

If Burt can't get ahead of Robertson and Ryan then there's something wrong with the Country selectors.

Deadset!! I reckon they'll pick Quinn (sad but true) and Tahu on the wings with Lyon and Cooper in the centres, but if any of those get injured or Lyon makes the test side then Burt has to be next in. Uate and Burt should both be ahead of Quinn, if he didn't play for the Storm he'd never get a look in. I'm another one hoping Gidley is in the test side so that Dugan plays too.

It is safe to assume that Gallen, Watmough, Lewis will be in Australia team, not 100% sure on Weyman, Stewart and Creagh but they are all possibles.

CvC should be made up of teams with similar structure to trial players for specific positions in the Origin team.

Number. Position - City - Country

1. Young, talented fullback - Coote - Dugan
2. Fast tough winger - A Minichiello - Gordon/Quinn/Merritt/Robertson/Burt
3. Large powerful centre - Champion - Idris
4. Slick strike centre - Jennings - Tahu (only because J Morris is injured)
5. Tall rangy winger - Lawrence - Ferguson
6. Gamebreaking 5-8 - Keating (only because Wallace is injured) - Carney
7. Controlling halfback - Hodkinson (only because Pearce is injured) - Kimmorley
8. Front row - Gibbs - Snowden
9. Crafty hooker - Farah - Ennis
10. Front row - Galloway - Douglas
11. Linebreaking backrow - M Minichiello - Creagh
12. Workhorse backrow - Waterhouse - Laffranchi/Heighington
13. Multi-skilled lock - O'Donnell - Stewart

14. Halves/lock utility - Anasta - Bird
15. Holehitting backrow - Hoffman - Scott/Paterson
16. Backrow/prop forward - Stuart/Payten (only because Shackleton is injured) - Learoyd-Lahrs/Mason
17. Front row - Mannah/Grant - Poore/Hunt/Henderson (only because Tolman is injured)

If fit, Shackleton would be there for City instead of Stuart/Payten, and Pearce or Wallace would be there instead of Hodkinson. Also, for Country, Tolman and Josh Morris would definitely be there if they were fit too.

NSW need to forget about rubbish props that have failed like Kite, White, Cross, Perry, etc. They are just too soft for Origin, they don't provide a good enough platform for us to win a match, seriously. Focus on these young bulls like Mannah, Snowden, Weyman, Galloway, Douglas, etc. They are the future, bring them through. Same with backrowers like Hindy, Simpson, Ryan, etc., as well as Matt Cooper. They are all steps backward. Quinn and Turner would get second chances because they are wingers, but really, they won't get into the NSW team because they are behind Hayne anyway.

and soward wont get picked for country as he is no where in the same class as carney,

ask yourself the games on the line do you want a player whos gonna grab the ball and make the match winning play.

or someone whos gonna try and milk a penalty and in the end cost the team.

With the Australian team picked, my CvC teams would have been:

CITY

1. Coote, 2. Minichiello, 3. Champion/Ayshford, 4. Jennings, 5. Lawrence, 6. Keating, 7. Hodgkinson, 8. Mannah, 9. Farah, 10. Galloway, 11. Minichiello, 12. Waterhouse, 13. O'Donnell, BENCH: 14. Anasta, 15. Hoffman, 16. Gibbs/Stuart, 17. Grant

COUNTRY

1. Dugan, 2. Gordon, 3. Idris, 4. Croker, 5. Ferguson, 6. Carney, 7. Kimmorley, 8. Poore, 9. Ennis, 10. Snowden, 11. Creagh, 12. Laffranchi, 13. Stewart, BENCH: 14. Bird, 15. Paterson/Scott/J Thompson, 16. Learoyd-Lahrs, 17. Douglas

Bad decisions by CvC selectors = Brett White, Luke Burt, Michael Robertson, Willie Mason, Timana Tahu. These are all backward steps IMO.
