He certainly did McSharkie. Set up a try, scored a try. 26 tackles, 0 misses from recollection. I believe 2 line breaks? He was sound next game up against Parramatta, but then got caught out reading two change of angle runs against Ruben Wiki in his next game - after half an hour he was subbed off. His next appearance was against the Chooks - he dropped a pass he shouldn't have attempting to hit a hole, but made a top tackle on Minichiello after he'd smashed the line. He was playing lock that day. He came to light also against the Sharks in the 48-42 trial win in 2002 where he was the Warriors best player that day.
I don't necessarily know how much you can read into the multi position status - the website also lists Stacey Jones is not only a halfback, but also a second rower/centre!!!!! Not quite this century anyhow.
Mellars is a wing/centre, backrower at a push. He's been in very fine form again for the Wellington club in the Bartercard Cup. He scored two tries last weekend.
He has usually very good hands, although apparently he was found out somewhat against Penrith in a trial taking high balls. From what I hear Rooney was all over him and it wasn't his happiest of days.
Paul "Chief" Harragon rates Vinnie as our player to watch in 2004 - he's as quick as Toopi was last year, is a better man for man technique and strength wise defender who can run a good hole line. There's been a lot of speculation and innuendo about other players at the Warriors and their future - I think they'll be very keen to keep Mellars and I'm sure he's contracted until the end of 2005, not that seems to matter anymore at the Warriors. Loaded with potential, himself, Marcus Perenara (younger brother of Henry Perenara and a five eighth of massive ability) and Manu Vatuvei (called by NZRL media people as Jonah Lomu v 2.0 - 17, bigger than Meli/Vainakolo, extremely fast with a high workrate) are our three biggest up and coming backs. It'd most definitely be a huge loss to our future to lose Mellars.
