You would like to of thought that the NRL has learnt a thing or two from having players as the 'face of the game'. It only really serves to make the game look foolish when said players misbehave, as it did this year.

There are dozens and dozens of wonderful athletes in this competition. Brett Stewart, Greg Inglis and Jarryd Hayne are not the only ones.

Theres nothing wrong with having someone as the face of the game. Yes its only one way to advertise the game, but its not a bad concept.

Its just that whoever (person/persons) keeps picking "the face of the game" needs to be fired or atleast have a good look at what their selection criteria and decision making process is.

Brett Stewart and Greg Inglis while they are both great footy players, its not very hard to identify that they are both as dumb as a box of rocks.

Why the hell would you want to base a multi million dollar advertising campaign on either of them.

Its like when they picked Gasnier as the face of the world cup and then he pissed off to union. What an embarresment.

The NRL prior to this season had a few decent marketing campaigns that focussed on all the clubs, usually one or two stars from each. Obviously last year we had the excellent centenary ad, but why on earth did they think that focussing on two players, from two teams most other supporters despise no less, would be a good idea? And why the hell after this year would they try the same trick again?

The most effective ads showed numerous players actually showing their athletic skills or strength i.e. attributes that even non-league followers could appreciate.

Like everything else News Limited has done with league, they stuff it up every time.

If you really want an ad representative of the game, just have David Gallop being interviewed. There would be TV in the distant background showing a game and gallop would stress 2 points:
1. Rugby league has been extremely profitable for PayTV and News Limited; and
2. Rugby league opens the door to international opportunities for its players - by enabling them to go to rugby or to SuperLeague in the UK.

Now, that would be an accurate portrayal of modern rugby league.

I am going to be intentionally vague here and i know this will annoy some people and others might think im trolling, i wouldnt blame them...but make no mistake - this is Thuggdogg at his most serious.

Having Jarryd Hayne as the face of the NRL could really, really backfire, worse than alot of the scandals in rugby league today.
