Tom Hawkins is a fantastic pick-up under father/son and would surely have gone top five otherwise.

1) You cannot be drafted at 16, you must be aged over 17 and a half to be picked up and the vast majority of players drafted are 18 year olds.
2) All players in the competition come through the draft, initially.
3) Junior football practices, processes and talent identification methods have improved markedly in recent years and will only continue to improve. As such, we'll see more and more first and second round picks going on to have strong to brilliant careers. While we'll still see some surprise gems picked-up with lower picks, there'll be a lot less than occurred during the 90s when identification methods were vastly weaker.
