For your assessment of players, who was decent and how the newbies went.

Game Plan, attack, and Defense

Referee, linesmen

Sparky the Eel

Ballboys

Should we bring back the Cheerleaders ?

He must have a big night planned, and wouldn't be able to put up the post-match thread at 9.45pm.

I actually love the idea of this post-match assessment thread- because it means when Pou stinks up the match day thread after fulltime, we can all ignore that 😂.

Oh I go first

Forwards need work especially the edge ones.

We will be fine when Junior and Joe come back into the team along with Williams Hopgood.

Backs went ok Russell and Will Penisini are going to be handy this year as well as Samrani I think he made up for his crap game last week.

Iongi is a beast will be playing fullback for Tonga not that Hoppa jr jr kid!

Bring in Drown Moses with Iongi Penisini Lomax they should be ok

Still not certain on our hooker I hope Smith goes to CUP and works on his game.
I don't see Hands playing hooker long term for us.

So we are left with a hooker than was on the bench in SuperLeague, please he should be there now, not in the NRL.

There was a lot of meh out there tonight. Forwards generally looked underdone and off the pace, edge defence was atrocious. Call it rust, call it new tactics and combos - either way Ryles and the players have some work to do to get us in shape to try and finish in the bottom end of the top eight.

Positives
Iongi - lots of talent, I think we won if you consider a straight swap for Blaize
Penisini - happy with his efforts tonight, keep it up consistently Will
Williams - I liked his efforts, happy with him being in our middle rotation (RCG who?)

Good potential
Latu - I see a good career ahead of him, hope he gets a taste of NRL during the season
Riley Smith - ditto, and would be happy with him as an NRL bench option later in the season too if needed
Twidle - this game would have helped his development, has potential but not in the first grade mix this season for mine

A bit underwhelming?
Lomax - dare I say it, maybe he just needs more games at centre to improve his contribution?
Volkman - too many missed/poor tackles in him at this level, can kick and may improve but prefer even say Hands as back-up NRL half if needed this season

Poor
Tuilagi - missed or poor tackles all night long, including directly leading to multiple tries. Probably played his way out of the first choice 17 and into Cup with that performance, poor defence probably too much of a risk for a 30min NRL bench role in Round 1.
Cartwright - not as dire as Tuilagi, but still too many missed/poor tackles on the edge to claim a starting edge spot

I thought lomax went well
Defended well and did some good hit ups
We didn’t have much or great ball whilst he was on the field so not worried about his attack

Okay, I have reviewed the match. My observations:

Iongi couldn’t have done much more. He was impressive on either side of the ball.

I like Russell on the left wing. He looked strong tonight, though I have thought the same at the start of the last two seasons. The right wing is his to lose and Simonssons to win.

Penisini looked good with the ball. He was essentially untested defensively on the left edge.

I don’t love having to start the year with Tago on the wing. He doesn’t make 10m/hit up, isn’t an aerial threat, is not particularly fast etc. But who else? Hes probably the best available.

Twidle is an interesting project. He has the size, speed, ball skills, seemingly the nous and a short kicking game. Volkman come back to earth.

Williams hurts in defence.

Grieg won’t be in the 17 and I would be rapt for him if he was to pick up a contract for 2026 (elsewhere).

Cartwright was mediocre and Tuilagi was a train wreck. If that was an in-season game, Kelmas performance would be making an all-time stinker list. I read an interesting article this week which indicates that he misses tackles he probably shouldn’t (high average metres per missed tackle, indicating teammates for good reason think he has the ball carrier covered?) Read on here. I was hoping and anticipating a new lease from Kelma. Maybe three try causes? I now have grave concerns for our second row stocks.

Cartwright is better on the right. Probably guilty of trying to do too much to win a spot.

Hopgood looked extremely underdone, which is expected to some degree. Will be better for the run and will be raring in no time.

Matto likewise, but is this his new norm? I wouldn’t like to think so. I noticed that he was fairly slow to rise last year and issues would arise around him. Worrying.

I loved Moretti’s work. Hard to put down and handle with some safe, clean offloads. Will be in the 17.

Interesting to see Doorey in the middle. He’s bullocking with the ball.

I’m still very high on Guymer but he’s clearly a middle. You can’t expect a tackle breaking, metre eating, line breaking specimen. He’s a Jake Trbojevic snap them defensively and make 7 metres a hit up type player. He still might be our best left edge option.

I have remained very reserved on Ryley Smith up until tonight. I thought he was our best. Qualms about his service last week on my end dissipated. Brings energy, clean defensively and has a left foot kick. Liked his deception. A real welcome surprise. Where has he been hiding and what am I missing?

I saw a few sloppy defensive moments, which had me worried. Maybe I was looking for more impact (defense and attack) given his size and paycheck? But benefit of the doubt in what is almost a new playing position for him.
