Pre-season Trials

Regular preseason rivals Melbourne and Gold Coast are again lined up for trials against the Vodafone Warriors ahead of the club’s 28th NRL campaign.

They’re due to travel to Victoria for a hit-out against the Storm in suburban Melbourne on February 19 while they’ll be at their 2022 home Moreton Daily Stadium in Redcliffe for their final dress rehearsal on February 26.

Last season the Vodafone Warriors had just one official trial due to the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Their intended clash with the Storm in Melbourne was cancelled leaving them with only an encounter with the Titans in Lismore (which finished in a 12-12 draw).

Then two weeks later the same two sides met in the opening round of regular season when the Vodafone Warriors worked their way to a 19-6 win in Gosford.

It will be close to a repeat scenario this year with the Vodafone Warriors and the Titans clashing on February 26 and then in the second round three weeks later in Robina.

  • Ticketing information will be announced soon for the February 26 trial against the Titans at Moreton Daily Stadium.

I hope it televised, I know its not indicative of how the team will track over the season but its good to see new signings and other players that you often wont see all season have a go.

Ive been to Cast fields in Melbourne where the trial will be played. I doubt it will be televised. Its like a normal club footy homeground

* VFL home ground and where the AFL premiers (Demons) are based over summer.
It's a pretty impressive facility.

VFL/VFLW games are televised from there all the time.

Looking forward to watching a few of them and see some new names

Looking forward to watching Koula for Manly, sounds like he will be Toms backup this year, and he has been touching up Saab speed wise

Solid trial. Any win over the Storm is good 18-30
Defense looked good on the line when wingers or centre didn't rush out of the line.
Smith a solid looking forward who scored a good try.
Ash Taylor didn't impress, terrible kicks.
Chanel will play Fullback when Reece suspended, looked out of place.
Cook Grubber kicks at line useless, but an impressive 40/20.
Walsh with his flashy plays.
Berry some solid defense.
Montoya scored a double after stripping for numbers.
Storm player binned with 4mins left for swinging arm on Walsh that didn't connect, he left field with bleeding tongue from jumping in celebration and landing on Chanels shoulder! Ha

Tevaga still not a hooker.
Katoa looks strong.
Lodge needs to lose the offload.
Walsh very tidy.
Berry great defensively.
Montoya absolute follow me type of player.
Some no names played well late.
Was Peranara in bunker? He’s still average.
All in all, decent workout after average first quarter.

Bunker 50/50 calls didn't go our way.
Glad they overturned to give Smith try at end as went up no try.

I thought Berry was great on attack with his passing. Quite unusual for a Warrior's center.

I've loved Berry from ball one. Real footy player. Builds his game around defence, but can offer a fair bit in attack too. Such an asset to our side. Our left side attack looks the goods with him, Berry and Montoya, plus Walsh running that side when he's back.

I thought it very noticeable that in the second quarter, when Tevaga was swapped out for Otukolo, the forwards started to get rolling better. Bit underwhelmed by Taylor. Ones who impressed were Walsh, Berry, Montoya, Otukolo, Lodge, Aitken, Katoa, Afoa, Kosi and CHT.
Captains challenge worked well for the Storm not for Jazz.
Solid first trial.

I thought Pene looked good. Should be a useful pickup. Katoa, Berry, Montoya, Lodge and Walsh were also good. I too was disappointed with Taylor and Nikorima. CHT looked all at sea in the first half at FB.

Strong schoolboy union background, right? I think it’s pretty clear that’s where we need to actively be recruiting from, particularly in the backline. Those guy learn the football IQ stuff our league guys often struggle with, how to create overlaps, draw and pass, and the proper defensive counters to those things. And i don’t think there’s a whole lot of difference in defensive ability these days, the key skill is to make your one on one tackles which is key in either code.

I would be trying Berry at fullback. Played there in union at St Pats
I think he's too good in that centre position, which has been so problematic for us. He is an outstanding defender - if anything, he could be moved to the right to shut down left side attacks from other teams. Having said that, his combo with Montoya seems spot on, so I wouldn't be doing that now.

I know there's major issues over Walsh's defense at FB (highlighted again on the weekend with that weak effort on Coates) but I wouldn't want one of my best defenders making 1 important tackle a week.

Especially for centers...they seem to develop a more rounded game in union, rather than just the power game.
